Gonzales Sweeps Three Events as Megaminx Endurance Tests Field at SM MakatiEnglish

Aragon Martin Gonzales delivered a dazzling 2.03-second winning average on the 2x2x2 Cube to set the tone for an explosive day of speedcubing action in Makati City, Philippines. The single-day Pinoy Side Events Open 2025 brought 70 competitors together on May 10, 2025, at SM Makati for a packed schedule spanning seven distinct events and 13 rounds of competition. While compact formats moved at breakneck speed, the day demanded formidable mental endurance across complex, high-piece puzzles that tested concentration, turning stamina, and algorithmic mastery across multiple tiers of play.

The 12-sided Megaminx served as the supreme test of endurance at the venue, demanding dozens of precise turns per solve across extended sequences. Rey-Ann Constantino mastered the grueling discipline across two intense rounds, capturing the title with a tournament-best 49.85-second average alongside a sharp 46.83 single. Francis Yuel B. Merced secured second place on the podium with a 51.33 average, while Jansen Alvarez battled through the extended solve counts to clinch third in 53.23. The prolonged turning stamina required in the event offered a stark, gripping contrast to the faster formats on the stage.

Gonzales proved to be the day's most decorated competitor, securing a remarkable trio of gold medals. In the classic Rubik's Cube main event, Gonzales outpaced a massive field of 68 entrants to top the 3x3 results with a rapid 7.29 average and a best single solve of 6.46. Juan Miguel Y. Magallanes took the runner-up spot on the 3x3x3 podium with an 8.07 average, finishing just fractions ahead of Javier Ignacio, who earned third place with an 8.09 mark during the single-round showdown.

Gonzales maintained the same unyielding pace in the Pyraminx, taking the top step through three rigorous rounds with a decisive 2.76 winning average and a single of 1.63. Chris Padua pushed the pace closely to take second place with a 2.83 average, while Jansen Alvarez claimed third with 4.21. In the 2x2x2 Cube, Gonzales completed his sweep with his tournament-winning 2.03 average and 1.65 single, leading Jansen Alvarez in second at 2.82 and Javier Ignacio in third at 3.01.

Zion Wyatt Rentillo Catalan cut his Skewb personal record nearly in half, registering a 4.16 single that was 49.6 percent faster than his prior best, alongside a 2.98 single in 2x2x2 that improved by 20.5 percent across six entered disciplines. Kart Immanuel Lara slashed his Pyraminx mark by 47.9 percent down to 5.87 and lowered his 2x2x2 personal best by 21.8 percent to 5.44. Edwin D.
