Long Distance Journeys Meet Tactical Brilliance at Perth FMC Day 2023English
Thirteen competitors gathered at The Switch on February 18, 2023, turning Perth, Western Australia, Australia into a focused hub of methodical calculation. Solvers made substantial journeys across continents and oceans to attend this specialist gathering, which dedicated its entire schedule to a single discipline across two intensive rounds. The lure of testing brainpower against the clock brought international talent from Japan and Singapore alongside Australia's finest tacticians, all ready to leave their mark on the scoresheets.
The specialised nature of the meet created an atmosphere distinct from the rush of standard speedcubing events. Rather than testing turning speed, 3x3x3 Fewest Moves requires deep spatial intuition, pencil notation, and exhaustive planning within an hour-long window. With every rotation carrying strategic weight, contenders travelled far to secure an official WCA competition environment that rewarded pure analytical depth and sustained concentration under pressure.
Australian standout Jayden McNeill delivered a masterclass across the day, claiming overall victory with a decisive winning average of 26.00 in the final round. McNeill showcased extraordinary form earlier in the schedule by setting an Oceanian record average of 21.67 moves, supported by a best single of 19 moves in the competition and an official round single of 20. The performance set an immense standard for the entire meet.
International representation delivered strong resistance in the top tier as Takumi Tamura of Japan claimed second place on the podium with an average of 27.33 moves. Tamura joined McNeill in pushing the limits of the classic Rubik's Cube format, demonstrating the global draw of the gathering. Joshua Hounslow of Australia rounded out the podium positions by taking third place with a disciplined average of 28.33 moves.
Away from the top steps of the podium, several participants produced remarkable personal milestones that highlighted the event's depth. Charlie van Ooran achieved a personal best single of 30 moves, an improvement of 23.1 percent over a previous mark of 39, and went on to take 4th place. Eshiel Benzion Narayanan secured 5th place while recording a personal best of 42 moves, which was 19.2 percent faster than the previous 52. Charlie McClung took on a first ever attempt at 3x3x3 Fewest Moves to notch a single of 74, while Tyler Williams logged a personal best single of 28 moves, bettering a prior mark of 31 by 9.7 percent.
The progress continued across the rest of the cohort as Lachlan Stephens earned 6th place with a personal best single of 28 moves, a 3.4 percent improvement from 29. Jonathan Charlesworth matched that position with a 6th-place finish of his own while logging a round single of 29 and an average of 30.67. Singaporean traveller Glen Goh Wee Zhuan secured an 8th-place finish after entering the sole discipline, and Jaxon Foster reached 9th place while locking in a single of 40 moves to cap a productive day.
The technical demands of the discipline were evident right across the scorecards, where even experienced contenders met challenges with recorded DNFs alongside high-calibre solutions. Lachlan Stephens concluded the rounds with an official average of 31.00 moves, while Eshiel Benzion Narayanan recorded an average of 47.00. Jaxon Foster produced an official average of 45.33, and Charlie van Ooran posted an average of 39.67 moves, illustrating the endurance required across multiple attempts.
As the lone tournament date drew to a close, Perth FMC Day 2023 demonstrated the unique appeal of analytical speed cubing disciplines within the global community. The dedicated focus on alternate 3x3 results proved that travelling thousands of kilometres for a single event offers its own rich rewards, setting a high benchmark for the region as competitors prepare for the wider challenges of the competitive year ahead.
