Specialist Events Take the Spotlight at Pé Vermelho 2023 in LondrinaEnglish
Eleven events challenged the roster of 44 competitors across 18 rounds of play at Associação Guarda Mirim de Londrina on October 28 and 29. While standard speedcubing puzzles drew their usual depth, the weekend schedule gave prime billing to niche disciplines that demand unique problem-solving skill sets. Held in Londrina, Paraná, Brazil, the 2023 tournament gathered specialists in everything from blind solving and move-efficiency planning to non-standard rotational puzzles. Pé Vermelho 2023 proved to be a diverse showcase where varied formats highlighted different aspects of mechanical puzzle mastery.
The tactical 3x3x3 Fewest Moves contest required competitors to analyze scrambles and write out the shortest possible solution in a strict time window. Bruno Henrique de Abreu claimed the top spot with a single of 38 moves, holding off Nicolas Jashchenko Omori who logged 40 moves and Heron Sato with 44 moves. The mental marathon of 3x3x3 Blindfolded, which relies strictly on memory before execution, saw Nickolas Naoki Maruyama secure victory as the sole finalist to record a successful time under two minutes with a winning single of 1:23.08, while Bruno Henrique de Abreu placed second with a mark of 6:07.77.
Other non-standard events brought rapid changes to the leaderboards throughout the cubing competition. Gabriel Devens topped the Pyraminx field across two rounds, clinching first place with a 4.41 winning average and a fast 2.87 single. Meanwhile, Tiago Akihiro Fujita demonstrated complete control over several distinct disciplines, taking the Square-1 title with an 18.23 average and a 12.12 single, and ruling the 12-sided Megaminx event with a 1:09.56 average, finishing ahead of Nicolas Jashchenko Omori at 1:41.93 and Nickolas Naoki Maruyama at 1:50.02. Fujita added yet another title in Skewb with a 5.19 winning average.

In the 3x3x3 One-Handed final, Fujita earned first place with a 16.33 average, followed by Nickolas Naoki Maruyama with 22.62 and Bruno Henrique de Abreu with 22.95. Scaling up in size, Fujita won the 4x4x4 Cube with a 33.05 average ahead of Bruno Henrique de Abreu at 45.51 and Gustavo Rofner at 53.77.
