Bacouël and Ratto Lead the Pace at Pays de Bray Open 2023English

Inside the Salle Bernard Leblond in Serqueux, France, the tables were lined with timers, mats, and turning puzzles across the weekend of June 3 to June 4. A gathering of 87 competitors assembled for Pays de Bray Open 2023, filling the hall with the rhythmic clatter of plastic mechanisms. Speedcubing action across 10 official events provided two packed days of head-to-head racing, testing raw dexterity from the smallest twisters to the most intricate multi-layered challenges across 16 total rounds.

The fastest short-format events took center stage, delivering dramatic turn speed from the outset. In the 3x3x3 Cube, which drew a massive field of 84 competitors across three stages of eliminations, John Bacouël captured first place with an impressive winning average of 8.36 seconds. Bacouël also delivered the tournament low single of 5.89 seconds, leaving his mark on the premier Rubik's Cube category as the only competitor to dip under the six-second threshold during the final phase.

The ultra-fast 2x2x2 Cube division moved at a breakneck tempo across two rounds of play involving 69 entrants. Louis-Marie Ratto emerged on top of the standings, claiming the title with a blistering 2.11 winning average and a best single solve of 2.03 seconds. Bacouël secured the runner-up spot on the podium with a 3.33 average, while Michel Ye claimed third position with a 3.81 mark, completing an all-French sweep of the podium spots in the event.

Ratto continued his dominance in short-format solving by securing the top spot in the Pyraminx competition. Facing a lineup of 60 competitors over two rounds, Ratto posted an event-winning average of 3.36 seconds alongside a single of 2.85 seconds. Anthony Lafourcade captured second place with an average of 4.04, narrowly edging out Bacouël, who earned his third podium finish of the meet with a third-place mark of 4.05 seconds.

Beyond the sprint showdowns, under-the-radar competitors achieved major breakthroughs throughout the weekend. Manon Antoine took on three events, achieving an 8th-place finish in Pyraminx with a personal best of 5.13 seconds, which was 52.8 percent faster than her prior mark, while also lowering her 3x3x3 Cube best to 14.09. Képha Baguelin claimed 7th place in Pyraminx with a career-best 3.79, an improvement of 52.4 percent, alongside a 2x2x2 Cube personal best of 3.02. Milan Bernard lowered his 2x2x2 Cube best to 3.80, a 41.3 percent drop, and his 3x3x3 Cube best to 16.11. Mika Bernard tackled Pyraminx for the first time with a 21.90 single and took 46.5 percent off his 2x2x2 Cube record with a 12.16 mark.

The personal milestones continued as Tim Unterderweide entered four events, posting his first ever official attempts in 4x4x4 Cube at 1:34.42 and 5x5x5 Cube at 2:26.29, alongside a 49.4 percent improvement in 2x2x2 Cube to 3.59.
