Travelers Converge on Pune as Nikhil Soares Claims Double Victory at Pavillion OpenEnglish

180 competitors travelled across regional transport lines and city routes to reach The Pavillion Mall on May 20 and May 21, turning the shopping destination into a thriving hub for speedcubing. Entrants journeyed into Pune, Maharashtra, India to take part in the bustling multi-discipline gathering. Across two full days, the roster contested 10 events over 20 rounds of high-pressure puzzle solving. The distance covered by participants underscored the growing regional draw of tournament play, bringing together seasoned finalists and ambitious newcomers for a major speed cubing weekend in 2023.

The premier 3x3x3 Cube event drew a massive field of 177 competitors through three intensive rounds of solving. Nikhil Soares emerged victorious in the final round, logging a winning average of 8.24 seconds alongside a best single of 7.62 seconds to capture top honors on the main stage. The battle for the podium was extraordinarily close, with Shubham Maharana securing the runner-up position with an 8.28 average and Kalidindi Hardhik Varma taking third place with an 8.30 average. These razor-thin margins defined the standard of excellence across the entire 3x3 results leaderboard.

Soares also distinguished himself on the twelve-sided Megaminx, navigating the single-round contest of 33 entrants to take first place with a 37.49 average and a best single of 34.10 seconds. Arnav Adani followed in second place with an average of 46.60 seconds, while Shubham Maharana added another podium finish to his tally by taking third in 52.76 seconds. The dual victories for Soares cemented his standing as one of the most versatile competitors of the weekend across very different mechanical puzzles.

In the short-format puzzles, the 2x2x2 Cube saw 140 entrants test their burst speed over three rounds. Arnav Adani claimed the title with a rapid 1.90 average and a single solve of 1.37 seconds. Meanwhile, the Pyraminx bracket gathered 119 competitors across three rounds, culminating in a win for Sumiran Maiskar, who secured a winning average of 3.28 seconds and a single of 2.74 seconds. Soares took second place in Pyraminx with a 4.05 average, ahead of Imaad Sohel Ajani in third at 4.11.

Mechanical precision continued to shine in the 4x4x4 Cube, where Siddhesh Pore led an 88-person field across two rounds to win with a 31.63 average and a single of 27.80 seconds, holding off Aarav Gandhi at 32.77 and Soares at 34.03. In the 3x3x3 One-Handed division, Bhargav Narasimhan topped a field of 95 competitors with a 13.23 average, followed closely by Kalidindi Hardhik Varma at 13.43 and Harsh Arvind Shelwatkar at 15.47. In the Clock event, Neil Gour delivered a 5.32 winning average across two rounds to secure victory.

Arnav Sethi participated in seven events, earning 22nd place in Square-1 and posting first attempts in Skewb at 9.78, One-Handed at 58.56, and Clock at 27.24.

Specialist categories delivered memorable individual triumphs as the weekend schedule drew toward its conclusion. Pranav Dandgaval topped the 25-competitor Square-1 event with a 13.14 average, while Moksh Patel won the 66-person Skewb tournament in 4.47 seconds. All 30 podium places across the weekend were claimed by athletes representing India.

As the equipment was packed away at the conclusion of Pavillion Cube Open 2023, the gathering highlighted the dedication required to travel and compete at an official WCA competition. From the intense three-round sprints to the technical demands of blindfolded and big-cube disciplines, Pavillion Cube Open 2023 demonstrated the depth of talent currently thriving across Maharashtra and the broader Indian speedcubing circuit.
