Parets Open 2025 Celebrates Breakthroughs and Dominant Wins in BarcelonaEnglish
A blistering 4.55 single and a 5.72 winning final average from Bofan Zhang on the classic Rubik's Cube set the tone for an expansive weekend of action in Catalonia. Across February 1 and February 2, the Sala Cooperativa Parets del Vallès hosted Parets Open 2025, bringing together 129 competitors across 17 official events and 23 rounds. The gathering proved to be a vibrant speedcubing festival, serving as a proving ground for newcomers alongside established regional talent.
For many in the field, this cubing competition offered a first real taste of the competition floor. Taking part in an official WCA competition means stepping up to the timer, submitting puzzles to the scrambling table, and handling the unique pacing of live rounds. While the headline 3x3 results drew considerable attention, the atmosphere inside the hall was equally shaped by competitors venturing beyond standard puzzles to test themselves against unfamiliar formats.
Bofan Zhang assembled a remarkable run throughout the weekend, securing victories in multiple events. Beyond leading the 126 entrants in the 3x3x3 Cube, Zhang claimed first place in the 4x4x4 Cube with a 27.65 average ahead of Daniel Cofreces Jaureguizar and Anton Piau. Zhang added a third title in the 5x5x5 Cube, recording a winning average of 1:01.78 to hold off Pavlo Bondar and Cofreces Jaureguizar in a tightly contested top three.
Pavlo Bondar delivered his own commanding campaign across a wide variety of puzzle disciplines at Parets Open 2025. Bondar secured victories in 3x3x3 One-Handed with a 12.90 average, Megaminx with a 49.47 average, 6x6x6 Cube with 2:01.40, and 7x7x7 Cube with a 3:06.86 mark. He also collected podium finishes in Clock, 4x4x4 Blindfolded, and the 5x5x5 Cube, underscoring exceptional versatility across single-handed, big-cube, and specialty categories.
Away from the top steps of the podium, the deeper story of the tournament emerged through personal progression and major breakthroughs across the roster. Eloi Gómez Montejano made debut appearances in the 2x2x2 Cube with a 7.77 mark and Skewb with 26.82, while taking an enormous 43.6 percent cut off a previous standard to record a 3x3x3 Cube personal best of 25.54. Roberto Lloréns Dueñas took on 10 events, logging a career-first 5x5x5 Cube attempt of 2:19.15, a maiden Square-1 attempt of 1:01.00, and a 3x3x3 Blindfolded personal best of 3:41.81 that was 36 percent faster than before.
Axel Saúl Meza Saldarriaga competed across 8 events, registering a best finish of 41st in Megaminx while recording first-ever attempts in Clock at 19.16 and Megaminx at 1:57.29, alongside a 2x2x2 Cube best of 4.01 that was 33.6 percent faster. Lenny Bleu tackled 5 events, earning an eleventh-place 11.23 in his first Skewb attempt, a 17.35 initial Clock mark, and a 23.3 percent improvement to a 3.09 2x2x2 personal best. Guiu Torras Arcusa posted first-time marks of 10.15 in 2x2x2 and 14.69 in Clock, plus a 21 percent improvement to 40.32 in 3x3x3, while Marc Martín León entered 9 events, logging first-ever attempts in the 5x5x5 Cube at 4:01.05, 3x3x3 One-Handed at 3:26.68, and 4x4x4 Cube at 2:48.35.
The blindfolded disciplines delivered demanding mental challenges throughout the schedule. Arthur Garcin captured the 3x3x3 Blindfolded title with a best single of 21.16, while Wilfrid Py topped the 3x3x3 Multi-Blind standings with 19 out of 21 cubes solved in 58:33. Jordi Lleixà López took double gold in the larger memory categories, winning the 4x4x4 Blindfolded event with a 2:10.98 single and the 5x5x5 Blindfolded event in 7:17.71.
Short-format puzzles provided high-speed drama in the elimination stages. Aitor Ibañez Larrea took the 2x2x2 Cube title with a 1.49 average, narrowly edging Zhang and Albert Mandicó Sampol. Mandicó Sampol triumphed in Pyraminx with a 2.67 average, Héctor Haro Guerrero won Skewb in 4.02, Manu Dutheil secured Clock with 6.12, Artur Miralles Hernàndez took Square-1 in 9.69, and Oscar Sánchez Najarro topped Fewest Moves with 21 moves.
When the final puzzles were locked and the venue cleared, Parets Open 2025 concluded having awarded podium positions across six nations, led by 23 top-three finishes for Spain. With its blend of sharp winning marks and inspiring debuts, the weekend in Parets del Vallès, Barcelona, Spain highlighted the continuing growth of speed cubing in the region for 2025.
