Aidan McKenzie Seals Three Titles as Derek White Claims Dramatic Square-1 Win in LincolnEnglish
A razor-thin margin of 0.11 seconds decided the Square-1 title at Panthers Cube Day 2023, setting the standard for high-stakes speedcubing across a jam-packed schedule. Held on April 22, 2023 at the Indian Head Resort in Lincoln, New Hampshire, USA, the gathering brought together 71 competitors across 8 events and 11 rounds. When the final turns settled in Square-1, Derek White took the crown with a 14.01 average, narrowly holding off Aidan McKenzie whose 14.12 average came down to the wire. Eben Quenneville secured third place on the podium with a 15.80 mark, while White also delivered the single best solve of the event at 8.52 seconds.
McKenzie answered that narrow setback by mounting an extraordinary multi-puzzle campaign throughout the cubing competition. In the marquee 3x3x3 Cube, which drew 68 competitors across three full rounds of Rubik's Cube solving, McKenzie captured the victory with a standout 8.14 average and a single of 6.27. Derek White earned runner-up honors at 8.32 seconds, while Canada's Maxence Leboeuf took third place with a 9.01 average. The 3x3 results capped a dominant showing for McKenzie, who turned the day into a showcase of consistency across different disciplines.
Beyond the traditional cube, McKenzie doubled down on technical events by claiming top honors in both 4x4x4 Cube and Megaminx. In the 4x4x4 Cube final, McKenzie registered a winning average of 34.74 and the fastest single at 29.81, outlasting Chandler Pike who finished second with 36.04 and Derek White who rounded out the podium at 36.93. In the 25-player Megaminx field, McKenzie proved untouchable again, locking in first place with a 40.05 average and a 33.98 single, finishing ahead of Eben Quenneville at 57.78 and Chris Yeager at 59.16.
Canadian speed cubing talent was on full display in the shorter disciplines, led by Maxence Leboeuf. In the 2x2x2 Cube, Leboeuf took gold with a 2.83 average and a 2.21 single across two rounds, besting Derek White at 3.14 and Chris Yeager at 3.34. Leboeuf repeated the feat in Pyraminx, outpacing 48 other entrants to finish first with a 3.29 average and a 2.33 single. Edward Habeck IV took second in Pyraminx with a 4.63 average, followed closely by Chris Yeager in third at 4.70 seconds.
Specialty events delivered further international success for Canada at Panthers Cube Day 2023. In Clock, Gabrielle Morasse captured the top step of the podium with a winning 6.51 average and a 6.01 single, edging past Edward Habeck IV who posted a 6.80 average and Nico Bezzerides who clocked 7.38 for third. In the 3x3x3 Blindfolded division, Elliott Kobelansky delivered a masterclass in memory and execution, winning the 11-competitor field with a 15.05 average and a 14.15 single. Patrick Collins took second place with a 56.09 average, while Morasse picked up another medal by taking third with a 1:23.31 mark.
