Alexander Vujcich Leads Domestic Charge at Palmerston North 2023English

The Community Leisure Centre was abuzz with activity on April 16, 2023, as competitors, judges, and supporters gathered across solving stations for a packed single-day programme. Timers flashed green, plastic mechanisms clicked in rapid succession, and scorecards circulated continuously through the main hall. The gathering marked a major regional stop for the domestic community, bringing together 76 competitors across 15 rounds of competition in Palmerston North, New Zealand. From opening heats to final showdowns, the atmosphere carried the distinct focus of a premier speedcubing meeting.

Local standout Alexander Vujcich delivered an exceptional performance on home soil at Palmerston North 2023, securing multiple podium finishes and demonstrating remarkable consistency across multiple events. In the premier 3x3x3 Cube event, Vujcich captured the title by logging an average of 7.81 seconds, backed by a best single solve of 7.03 seconds. Jasper Murray pushed hard throughout the final round to take second place with a 7.92 average, while Oscar Hansen completed an all-New Zealand podium in third place with a 9.60 average. The deep field of 75 competitors in the classic Rubik's Cube produced intense battles across three demanding rounds.

Beyond the standard 3x3 results, Vujcich doubled his victory count by capturing top honours in the 4x4x4 Cube. Navigating the expanded puzzle across two rounds, he posted a winning average of 33.57 seconds alongside a session-best single of 32.27 seconds. Jasper Murray earned the silver position with a 37.48 average, followed closely by Jack McDougall in third place with a mark of 38.15. Vujcich also secured podium finishes in three additional events, taking second place in the 2x2x2 Cube with a 1.92 average, second in the 5x5x5 Cube in 1:02.50, and third place in both 3x3x3 One-Handed and Pyraminx.

Jasper Murray put together a dominant multi-discipline campaign of his own, collecting three gold finishes throughout the afternoon. Murray took control of the Pyraminx contest, setting a blistering winning average of 1.87 seconds with a top single of 1.46 to lead Oscar Hansen and Alexander Vujcich. In the one-handed division, Murray topped 33 entrants with a 12.60 average and a 10.32 single, finishing ahead of Elisha Webster and Vujcich. Murray capped his triple-title day in the 5x5x5 Cube, recording a winning mark of 54.85 seconds to lead Vujcich and Vietnam competitor Ngô Việt Kiên, who placed third with a 1:13.00 average.

The 2x2x2 Cube provided some of the day's sharpest action across three rounds and 67 competitors. India speed cubing talent Ram Thakkar clinched the title with a tournament-best average of 1.68 seconds and a single of 1.29 seconds. Thakkar edged out Vujcich's 1.92 average and China's Yuki Gao, who earned third place with an average of 2.00 seconds.
