Louis Truong Claims Victory at Ottawa 3x3x3 Fall B 2024English
Twenty-three competitors gathered in Kanata, Ontario, Canada on October 26, 2024, for a day dedicated entirely to solving precision. While large-scale competitions often test endurance across heavy big cubes like the 5x5, 6x6, and 7x7 puzzles that demand relentless concentration and forearm stamina over hundreds of turns, Ottawa 3x3x3 Fall B 2024 took the opposite approach. The event stripped away the marathon multi-layered cubes to put total focus on the classic Rubik's Cube across three consecutive, high-intensity rounds.
The focused format meant there was nowhere to hide across the three rounds of competition. Speedcubing at this level requires immense consistency, as every turn of the 3x3x3 Cube directly dictates the standings. Held at A.Y. Jackson S.S., this specialized cubing competition brought together a compact field of dedicated solvers aiming for rapid times in the World Cube Association circuit.
At the top of the standings, Louis Truong representing the USA captured first place with an impressive winning average of 8.10 seconds. Truong set the benchmark early and maintained a commanding pace throughout the finals. His performance was punctuated by the fastest solve of the entire tournament, recording a best single of 7.73 seconds to secure the title and top the final 3x3 results.
The podium battle remained fierce right behind the winner. Omar Ellabban from Canada took second place on the podium with a strong final round average of 8.97 seconds. Jonathan Proulx, also representing Canada, completed the podium in third place with a recorded average of 11.10 seconds. The top three demonstrated exceptional hand speed and pattern recognition in every solve, earning their awards before an engaged venue.
Beyond the podium, the tournament produced significant personal breakthroughs throughout the rankings. Noah Baxter delivered one of the most remarkable improvements of the day, setting a new 3x3x3 Cube personal best of 23.16 seconds, which was 26.5 percent faster than their previous mark of 31.52. Johnny Kattan also surged forward, taking their personal best down to 12.93 seconds, an improvement of 22 percent compared to their earlier 16.58. Sam Clark dropped their personal record by 16.1 percent to 26.65 seconds, while Ayden Berg took their best mark to 33.97 seconds, shaving 12.6 percent off their previous time.
The progress continued across the rest of the pack at Ottawa 3x3x3 Fall B 2024. Sahaj Shrivastava recorded a new personal best of 10.70 seconds, marking a 10.5 percent leap, and finished fourth overall. Michael Faviana lowered their personal best to 12.53 seconds, a 5.9 percent improvement, while securing a sixth-place finish. Kiyan Blohm posted a personal best of 43.78 seconds, improving by 3.5 percent. Rounding out the memorable milestones, Mano Gomathinayagam took part in their first WCA competition, recording a first ever attempt of 24.68 seconds on the 3x3x3 Cube.
Julian Kim Bowman also put together a notable run through the bracket, finishing in fifth place overall. Eris McElroy secured seventh place, and Ben Bergen took eighth place in the final standings. Every round pushed competitors to refine their inspection and turn speed, showing the depth of the local speed cubing community in Ontario.
With twenty-three solvers completing three full rounds, the single-discipline gathering highlighted the intensity of pure speed solving. As the 2024 season moves forward, participants from Ottawa 3x3x3 Fall B 2024 will carry their new personal records and competitive experience into the next wave of regional tournaments.
