Hajime Miyazaki Clinches 3x3x3 Fewest Moves Victory at Otsu FMC Winter 2025English

Inside the halls of Asuto Hamaotsu on December 6, 2025, the usual frenzy of twisting plastic was replaced by quiet calculation and the scratching of pencils. Tables were covered in scrawled notations, check sheets, and carefully aligned cubes as competitors examined scrambles move by move. Rather than the blistering pace of traditional speedcubing, the atmosphere in Otsu, Shiga, Japan was defined by measured contemplation. Otsu FMC Winter 2025 brought together a dedicated group of solvers devoted entirely to finding the shortest possible solutions.

The specialised WCA competition focused exclusively on 3x3x3 Fewest Moves, running across two structured rounds for a field of 25 competitors. Unlike standard Rubik's Cube events where fractions of a second decide the victor, this discipline tests pure algorithmic efficiency and structural understanding within a sixty-minute window per attempt. Solvers work through multiple attempts to log single-move counts and calculate an overall mean, making endurance and deep technical knowledge paramount throughout the long sessions in Shiga prefecture.

At the conclusion of the second round, Hajime Miyazaki emerged at the top of the standings to claim first place. Miyazaki delivered a remarkably consistent performance, capturing the title with a winning average of 23.00 moves and securing a best single of 23 in the final round. Across the entire competition, Miyazaki registered an overall single of 21 and a 23.00 average, navigating the complex scrambles with minimal wasted movement to lead a tightly contested field.

The podium battle remained exceptionally close, separated by mere fractions of a move. Shota Wakabayashi secured second place overall with an average of 23.33 moves, having also logged a best single of 22 and an average of 23.00 during the competition. Yuto Morishita rounded out the podium in third place with an average of 23.67 moves, highlighting an impressive all-Japan sweep across the medal positions in a discipline where every rotation carries immense weight on the final score sheet.

Beyond the top three, the weekend produced several outstanding individual solutions across the two rounds. Yiwei Liu recorded a single of 20 and an average of 21.00 moves, while Takumi Tamura turned in a 22 single alongside a 22.33 average. Shuto Ueno posted a 22 single and a 23.33 average, Tomoyuki Hiraide finished with a 23 single and a 23.67 average, and Yuki Yamamoto achieved a 23 single and a 24.33 average, demonstrating the immense tactical depth present throughout the tournament.

Away from the top of the leaderboard, the event showcased remarkable personal breakthroughs that defined the heart of the gathering. Tomoki Moriyama achieved a massive leap in efficiency, earning a 3x3x3 Fewest Moves personal best of 22, which was 24.1 percent faster than their previous mark of 29, en route to a 10th-place finish. Akatsuki Kitamura made a similar stride, cutting their personal best down to 23 from a previous mark of 30 for a 23.3 percent improvement to take 11th place. Yusuke Kosaka also sharpened their analytical approach significantly, setting a personal best of 26 moves, an improvement of 13.3 percent over their previous best of 30, while placing 17th.

Milestones continued across the field as competitors explored the discipline on the official stage. Kazuya Ishii lowered their personal best to 22 moves, an improvement of 4.3 percent from 23, securing 7th place in the standings. Meanwhile, other speed cubing participants took their first steps in the event. Yusuke Suzuki registered a score of 52 in their first ever attempt at 3x3x3 Fewest Moves, while Takato Mori logged a 62 in their own first ever attempt at the event, embracing the unique mental challenge of pen-and-paper solving.

The single-day event highlighted the distinct charm of efficiency-focused solving within the broader cubing competition landscape. Otsu FMC Winter 2025 gave solvers the ideal platform to push their analytical limits, explore intricate insertions, and test new block-building strategies against the clock. As the 2025 calendar moves forward, the memorable 3x3 results from Otsu stand as a testament to the quiet artistry and intellectual rigor that define the discipline.
