Specialist Showdowns and Multi-Event Mastery at Örebro Side Events 2025English

Inside Kollektivhuset Vildsvinet, the atmosphere on May 11, 2025, hummed with the intense, measured cadence unique to non-traditional puzzle disciplines. Solvers gathered in Örebro, Sweden, surrounded by tables filled with specialized hardware ranging from multifaceted dodecahedrons to massive NxN puzzles. Unlike standard fixtures dominated by standard speed solving, this venue welcomed a focused group of competitors ready to test their mental endurance across intricate events. The intimate hall provided a quiet backdrop where every turn of a layer and tap of a timer resonated clearly across the floor.

The single-day schedule of Örebro Side Events 2025 offered a grueling test across 10 events and 14 rounds of competition. A tight roster of 12 competitors stepped up to the timing mats, navigating a lineup designed for seasoned specialists. While spectators often look for standard 3x3 results, this WCA competition put side events front and center, challenging participants across blindfolded disciplines, big cubes, and precision formats. The compact field meant competitors moved rapidly between judging stations and solving tables, keeping the venue active from morning to evening.

Daniel Wallin delivered an exceptional multi-discipline performance, capturing top honors in four separate events throughout the day. In the Megaminx event, Wallin posted a winning average of 48.88 seconds alongside a best single solve of 38.34 seconds across two rounds, besting Helmer Ewert who took second with a 55.33 average and Arvid Ahlstrand in third at 59.18. Wallin also earned victory in Square-1, recording a 9.54 winning average to narrowly edge out Ewert’s 9.62 in a tense final, while Ahlstrand claimed third step on the podium with 13.84.

Wallin extended his dominance into the memory disciplines, where blindfolded solving requires immaculate memorisation and execution under complete sensory deprivation. In 4x4x4 Blindfolded, Wallin took first place with a successful single of 2:01.73, while Gregor Bergman secured second place with 9:16.40. Wallin repeated his winning form in 5x5x5 Blindfolded, recording a 4:24.33 single for victory as Bergman again took the runner-up position with 24:17.00. Both events saw high attrition across the field, making clean completions a decisive factor on the podium.

The classic 3x3x3 Blindfolded contest brought international success for Austria, as Fabian Staber claimed the gold with a fast 1:46.80 single solve. Swedish solvers Alvar Nylén and Peter Hugosson-Miller followed on the podium with successful completions of 3:25.23 and 6:43.87 respectively. In 3x3x3 Fewest Moves, competitors spent their allotted hour deciphering optimal turn sequences away from the timing mats. Helmer Ewert earned the victory with an efficient 32-move solution, finishing just ahead of Wallin at 33 moves and Ahlstrand at 36 moves.

Beyond the top podium spots, the true depth of any cubing competition lies in the tireless dedication across the wider field. Veteran competitor Filip Åström brought extensive experience to the venue, participating in seven separate events throughout the day. Taking on a heavy workload across diverse disciplines, Åström achieved his best finish of the tournament in 3x3x3 Fewest Moves, securing a solid fifth place amid a highly competitive group of solvers.

Big cubes brought high-speed turning to the venue tables, where large NxN puzzles tested both finger speed and hardware control. In the 5x5x5 Cube, Samuel Eklund-Hanna recorded a winning average of 52.54 seconds with a best single of 50.79 to finish ahead of Ahlstrand at 58.69 and Nylén at 1:00.17. The 6x6x6 Cube saw Arvid Ahlstrand take top honors with a 1:45.76 average, holding off Nylén’s 1:48.15 and Erland Flodman’s 1:55.13. Nylén then claimed victory in the 7x7x7 Cube, putting together a 2:31.06 average featuring a best single of 2:23.92.

The Clock event rounded out the fast-paced action, testing rapid pin manipulation and dial alignment over two lively rounds. Erland Flodman mastered the mechanics to secure first place with a 4.37 average, setting the standard with a best single time of 3.28 seconds among 11 competitors. This blend of rapid mechanical events and deep blindfolded concentration showcased the diverse skills that define modern speed cubing.

As the day wrapped up at Kollektivhuset Vildsvinet, the medal count stood at 32 podium places for Sweden and 3 for Austria. The successful execution of Örebro Side Events 2025 highlighted the appeal of dedicated side-event gatherings within the broader speedcubing calendar. Solvers departed the venue having pushed the limits of Rubik's Cube variants, setting a strong benchmark for regional specialists as the competition circuit moves into its next phase.
