Daniel Wallin Secures Four Titles as Side Events Take Center Stage in ÖrebroEnglish
Seventeen competitors gathered at Kollektivhuset Vildsvinet on May 4, 2024, for a full day devoted entirely to specialty puzzles. With the spring speedcubing calendar reaching full momentum, Örebro Side Events 2024 carved out a distinct space in the competitive cycle by stepping away from standard three-by-three main events. Across 14 total rounds spanning nine non-standard disciplines, the gathering in Örebro, Sweden, allowed seasoned specialists and versatile solvers alike to test their form on the heavier big cubes, mechanical oddities, and rigorous blindfolded disciplines.
Daniel Wallin delivered the day's most dominant performance, securing four separate victories across a demanding slate of puzzles. On the 5x5x5 Cube, Wallin claimed top honours with a winning average of 1:01.27, edging out Helmer Ewert, who finished runner-up at 1:02.06, and third-place finisher Arvid Ahlstrand with a 1:06.94 average. Wallin also posted the quickest single solve of the event at 54.49 seconds. He carried that momentum straight into Megaminx, taking victory with a 45.63 average and a 43.65 single, once again finishing ahead of Ewert, who registered a 53.57 average.
Wallin continued to set the standard during the blindfolded rounds, where mental mapping and precise execution were put to the test. In 3x3x3 Blindfolded, Wallin took the title with a single of 32.87 seconds, leading Kacper Paweł Dworak from Poland, who logged 1:00.55 for second, and Ewert, who placed third with 1:01.21. In the 4x4x4 Blindfolded discipline, Wallin struck gold again with a single time of 1:53.65. Ewert completed his run in 7:38.20 for second, while Gregor Bergman rounded out the podium positions with a single of 10:38.00.
Helmer Ewert collected two titles of his own during the intense day of speed cubing. In Square-1, Ewert captured victory by averaging 8.29 seconds, highlighted by the round's best single of 6.76 seconds, leaving Wallin in second at 10.85 and Dworak in third at 14.86. Ewert added a second gold in 5x5x5 Blindfolded, recording a winning single solve of 14:34.00 to finish ahead of Dworak, who managed a successful time of 19:32.00 in a challenging contest where both Elias Nordlund and Wallin recorded DNFs.
The big cube division belonged to Arvid Ahlstrand, who showcased clinical precision across the 6x6x6 Cube and 7x7x7 Cube. Ahlstrand secured the six-layer event with an average of 1:48.15 and a best single of 1:42.11, finishing clear of Wallin at 1:55.30 and Teodor Bergman at 2:09.96. In the single-round 7x7x7 Cube contest, Ahlstrand took first place with an average of 2:38.67 and a single solve of 2:31.40. Wallin followed in second place with a 3:10.22 average, while Ewert reached the podium once more with 3:23.63. Clock concluded with a win for Rasmus Händén, who averaged 6.48 seconds with a fastest solve of 5.24 seconds.
Away from the top steps of the podium, several participants posted remarkable personal breakthroughs throughout the weekend. Axel Aronsson made significant strides across the big cube categories, securing a personal best of 2:10.88 on the 6x6x6 Cube, improving by 15.8 percent from his previous mark of 2:35.45. Aronsson also lowered his 7x7x7 Cube personal best by 10.3 percent with a 3:41.93 mark, bettered his 5x5x5 Cube mark to 1:01.39 by shaving 4.6 percent off his previous record, and finished fourth in the 5x5x5 Cube final. Emilia Nilsson also found notable progress, logging a 6x6x6 Cube personal best of 2:49.24 to drop 8.3 percent off her prior 3:04.65 time, while adding a 3 percent improvement on Megaminx with 3:14.65 and placing 7th in Clock across five total events.
New milestones defined the schedule for other competitors taking on fresh territory. Philip Nzeyimana tackled four events at the competition and took on three official challenges for the first time in his career, logging his first ever attempts with 4:34.64 on the 5x5x5 Cube, 44.70 on Clock, and 40.26 on Square-1. Meanwhile, Tim Staberg entered four events and delivered a strong run in the memory disciplines, achieving his best finish of the day by taking 4th place in 3x3x3 Blindfolded with a single solve of 1:51.24, showing how much progress is made behind the scenes at a dedicated cubing competition.
While enthusiasts often search for standard Rubik's Cube milestones or traditional 3x3 results, the focus at Örebro Side Events 2024 provided a stage for the breadth of the WCA regulation events. Over the course of the day, competitors representing Sweden earned 25 podium spots while Poland captured 3, reflecting sharp competition across every bracket. With big cube marks lowered and specialty solvers making their presence felt, the single-day gathering offered a compelling snapshot of technical mastery in the 2024 Swedish calendar.
As the season moves forward into larger national and regional championships, the depth displayed in Örebro highlights the ongoing growth within non-traditional formats. The combination of multi-discipline mastery from established winners and hard-earned personal bests from the broader field ensured that Örebro Side Events 2024 served as an essential benchmark for competitors preparing for the challenges of the season ahead.
