Massive Personal Bests and Sato Seven-Win Sweep Highlight Opentrópolis CEFET 2025English

Fifty-six competitors assembled across twenty-one rounds of high-speed solving, but the defining story of the weekend was the sheer rate of personal improvement on display. Held at Cefet/RJ - Petrópolis in Petrópolis, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil from March 22 to March 23, the cubing competition delivered massive breakthroughs alongside elite speedcubing excellence. From first-time puzzle appearances to dramatic time reductions, the 2025 tournament proved that preparation translates directly into performance when the timer starts running.

Caio Hideaki Sato put together a dominant showing, capturing top honors in seven different disciplines throughout the weekend. The Brazilian standout led the way in the traditional 3x3x3 Cube, posting a winning average of 6.45 seconds after securing the weekend's best single of 5.29 in a field of 53 competitors. Sato's consistency extended into 3x3x3 One-Handed, where he claimed first place with a 9.60 average and a 7.24 single across three rounds of play, demonstrating exceptional control with the classic Rubik's Cube.

Beyond the main event, the 3x3 results formed just one part of Sato's remarkable campaign. He secured additional victories in the 2x2x2 Cube with a 2.24 average, Pyraminx with a 2.86 average, and the 4x4x4 Cube with a 24.56 average. Stepping up to larger mechanisms and non-cubic geometry, Sato added wins in Megaminx with a 39.20 average and the 5x5x5 Cube with a 53.66 average, asserting control across short sprints and stamina-testing puzzles alike.

The remaining podiums at Opentrópolis CEFET 2025 highlighted sharp competition among Brazil's top solvers. Lucas Ichiro Yunomae commanded the biggest cubes on the schedule, taking first place in the 6x6x6 Cube with a 1:51.49 average and winning the 7x7x7 Cube with a 2:54.48 average. Jonathan Pires Medeiros earned the Skewb title with a 3.42 average, edging out Sato's 3.52 runner-up mark, while Kaique de Oliveira Neves took the top spot in Clock with a 5.08 average.

Away from the top steps of the podium, huge individual strides showed the depth of preparation across the roster. Igor Lopes Giamattey delivered two of the weekend's largest leaps, cutting his 3x3x3 One-Handed personal best down to 1:07.65 to finish 47.5% faster than his previous mark, while lowering his 4x4x4 Cube best to 1:50.28, an improvement of 40.4%. Rafael Rezende Magalhaes took on three events and dropped his 2x2x2 Cube best by 40.8% to 4.21, alongside a 9.2% drop in 3x3x3 to 20.53 and a first official attempt at 3x3x3 One-Handed in 47.49. Samuel Nascimento Franco took on six events, slicing his Skewb best by 33.2% to 7.39, recording a 4.81 personal best in 2x2x2 Cube, and putting up his first Clock solve at 24.31. Talita Silva Lisboa entered nine events, lowering her one-handed mark by 6.7% to 18.14 while posting debut solves of 4:15.12 in the 6x6x6 Cube for a 9th-place finish and 6:59.37 in the 7x7x7 Cube.

The drive to expand repertoires and test new disciplines was equally evident across the rest of the roster. Júlio Batista Tomáz da Silva contested eight events, taking 10th in Megaminx while logging first-ever official marks of 1:06.58 in the 4x4x4 Cube, 2:08.24 in the 5x5x5 Cube, and 25.06 in Clock. Gustavo Bortone Cardoso Perestrello Feijó also tackled eight events, placing 13th in the 6x6x6 Cube with a debut 10:11.00, alongside first attempts in Megaminx at 3:34.97 and 5x5x5 Cube at 5:24.39. Jonas Souto Brito entered six events, finishing 20th in Megaminx with a first-time 3:48.45, alongside debuts of 37.31 in 3x3x3 One-Handed and 12.85 in Skewb. Alline Oliveira Meireles Godoi took on five events, registering initial official marks of 25.42 in Pyraminx, 35.55 in Clock, and 2:12.97 in 3x3x3 One-Handed.

The 2x2x2 Cube competition featured intensely competitive sequences, where clean executions pushed times lower across the rounds. Kaique de Oliveira Neves secured the silver medal behind Sato with a 2.58 average and an event-leading single of 1.51 seconds, while Mariana Castro claimed bronze with a 3.53 average. The dynamic event saw numerous personal marks fall, emphasizing how fine margins and turning speed define the shortest format in speed cubing.

Podium battles across the eleven disciplines were exclusively contested by Brazilian competitors, who secured all thirty-three available podium spots. Gustavo Dias Dullens earned a pair of podium finishes, taking second in the 4x4x4 Cube with a 33.51 average and third in the 3x3x3 Cube with an 8.57 average, while Israel Machado Soares took silver in the 3x3x3 Cube with an 8.43 mark. In Pyraminx, Emanuel Victor Araújo dos Santos secured second place with a 3.15 average, finishing just ahead of Neves at 3.90.

With twenty-one rounds completed and extensive personal milestones recorded across eleven events, Opentrópolis CEFET 2025 concluded as a benchmark WCA competition for the Rio de Janeiro cubing community. The combination of Sato's multi-event sweep, Yunomae's big-cube mastery, and widespread personal-best breakthroughs provided a comprehensive display of talent that sets a strong foundation for the remainder of the competitive year.
