Steely Consistency Delivers Multi-Event Triumphs at Pontificia Universidad CatólicaEnglish

Inside the halls of the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú, the atmosphere was defined by steady rhythmic clicking and methodical preparation. Solving mats laid across tournament stations welcomed 138 solvers who traveled to Lima, Peru on July 19 and July 20, 2024. Across two full days, the participants prepared to tackle 26 rounds of puzzle action across 13 distinct disciplines, testing their speed and focus under the official timers.

The Open PUCP Cubing Community 2024 rewarded composure above all else, showing how rock-solid averages reliably overcome isolated quick turns. While lightning-fast singles often draw gasps, the structure of speedcubing demands that competitors deliver under pressure repeatedly across full rounds. Those who captured top honours throughout the weekend proved that sustainable execution remains the gold standard in modern tournament play.

Jose Antonio Cuipal Maguiña embodied this steady approach across multiple events, anchoring a standout weekend. In the main Rubik's Cube category, Cuipal Maguiña navigated four testing rounds against a field of 122 competitors to secure first place with a 7.41 final average, holding off Benjamín Ochoa who posted a 7.78 average and Pedro Giuseppe Garcia Milla with 8.62. The final 3x3 results proved that unrelenting pace across five solves makes the difference when margins tighten.

Cuipal Maguiña applied the same disciplined rhythm in the shorter events, capturing the 2x2x2 Cube title with an exceptional 1.98 winning average ahead of Sergio Minaya Pimentel and Leon Achata. He then stepped up in 3x3x3 One-Handed, outlasting 37 challengers over two rounds to claim another victory with a 12.14 average. His measured pacing across multiple rounds highlighted the technical mastery required to dominate diverse events at a high-stakes cubing competition.

Away from the top steps of the podium, several solvers achieved tremendous progress throughout the weekend schedule. Joaquín Carlos Gutiérrez Ramirez took on seven separate disciplines, achieving a personal best 4.47 in Pyraminx that was 47.4 percent faster than his prior mark of 8.50, while also lowering his 3x3x3 One-Handed best to 15.08 and his 3x3x3 Blindfolded time to 4:34.83 on his way to a 10th-place finish. Elder Fabrizio Florida Celiz tackled six events, recording his first official Megaminx result of 1:58.53 while slicing his 3x3x3 Cube personal best by 33.5 percent to 10.05 and dropping his 2x2x2 Cube best by 31.7 percent to 2.71.

Similarly notable personal milestones highlighted the depth of participation across this WCA competition. Salvador Alonso Valenzuela Cruz registered his first official Skewb attempt with a 13.35, along with a 4.82 personal best in 2x2x2 Cube that was 31.8 percent faster and an 11.44 in Pyraminx. Daniel Fernando Cuya Quispe completed his first 2x2x2 Cube solve in 8.12 and improved his 3x3x3 Cube mark by 28.9 percent to 30.77. Veikko Reyes recorded a first 2x2x2 Cube result of 15.43 and improved his 3x3x3 time by 27.9 percent to 44.05, while Aldair Alessandro Ochoa Domínguez logged his first 3x3x3 One-Handed attempt with 47.81 and lowered his 3x3x3 Cube personal best by 25 percent to 14.16.

In the larger twisty puzzles, endurance and methodical turn efficiency set the tone for the final standings. Marcelo Nuñez collected a pair of victories by taking the 6x6x6 Cube with a 1:40.28 average and the 5x5x5 Cube in 1:00.26, holding off tough challenges from Ricardo Sanchez Laurencio and Benjamín Ochoa. Sanchez Laurencio turned the tables in the massive 7x7x7 Cube contest, recording a winning 2:30.61 average to edge past Nuñez.

The specialised puzzles brought distinct challenges to the competition floor. Pedro Giuseppe Garcia Milla demonstrated great versatility by winning Megaminx with a 47.00 average and Square-1 in 15.55, alongside three other podium finishes during the weekend. Leonardo José Hilario Cori topped a field of 25 to win Pyraminx with a 3.39 average, while Benjamín Ochoa took the 4x4x4 Cube crown with a 31.15 mark. In Skewb, Walter Felix claimed top honors with a 3.53 average, and Ximena Paola Bazán Rivasplata earned the Clock title averaging 7.95.

The blindfolded discipline offered a test of pure memory and spatial awareness, where Dennis Preciado secured first place in 3x3x3 Blindfolded with a 52.52 single. As the final rounds wrapped up in Lima, the Open PUCP Cubing Community 2024 stood as a testament to balanced speed cubing and technical precision across all 13 events on the schedule.
