Garrett Collects Four Titles as Community Shines at Oldham County Cubing 2024English
Luke Garrett delivered an overwhelming masterclass in efficiency by capturing four event victories in a single day, setting the tone for a memorable gathering in La Grange, Kentucky, USA. Across nine rounds of competition on September 8, 2024, Garrett secured triumphs in four distinct disciplines, yet the heart of the action extended well beyond the top step of the podium. A tight-knit roster of 40 competitors turned the John W. Black Community Center into a bustling hub of mutual support, shared puzzle solutions, and vibrant energy across the entire schedule.
The atmosphere between rounds highlighted the true essence of speedcubing, where rivals sat side by side analyzing scrambles and trading advice. While Garrett was setting the pace on the main stage, participants throughout the venue engaged in friendly side solves, helping newcomers adjust to match conditions and sharing tips on everything from hardware tensioning to fingertricks. This supportive community backdrop gave Oldham County Cubing 2024 its distinctive character, celebrating personal milestones alongside elite achievements in equal measure.
The centerpiece 3x3x3 Cube competition provided plenty of excitement across three rigorous rounds. Garrett earned the championship with a winning average of 6.61 seconds, backed by a tournament-best single of 4.83. Miles Lentz put together a consistent series of solves to take the runner-up spot with an 8.50 average, while Jayden Clark rounded out the top three with a mark of 9.38. Across the board, competitors found their rhythm, driving high interest in the 3x3 results as the field pushed each other toward sharper times.
Beyond the classic Rubik's Cube, the roster featured four additional disciplines that showcased varied solving skills. Carson Clark (张卡森) broke Garrett's streak of titles by claiming the Pyraminx crown with an outstanding 2.20 winning average and a single of 1.65. Elliott Perkins pushed hard to claim second place in that event at 2.51, just ahead of Garrett in third at 2.98. In Skewb, Garrett rebounded for a narrow victory, averaging 3.39 to edge out Perkins at 3.41 and Dominic Brandi at 3.59.
The broader puzzle selection also challenged solvers in heavy-duty calculation and pure recall. Garrett conquered the large 5x5x5 Cube with a winning average of 52.33, joined on the podium by Lentz with 1:02.86 and Carson Clark (张卡森) at 1:09.32. The demanding 3x3x3 Blindfolded discipline, requiring intense memorisation before executing moves without sight, saw Garrett take first place with a 48.83 average. Evan Brown took second place with 58.19, followed by Sage Albright in third with a time of 2:32.48.
The official standings tell only part of the story, as numerous under-the-radar competitors delivered exceptional performances away from the main spotlight. Lucas Butler engineered massive progress, slashing his 3x3x3 Cube personal best to 13.33 seconds, a remarkable 49.8 percent drop from 26.58, while also making his first ever attempts in both Pyraminx and Skewb.
