United States Competitors Clean Sweep Podiums at Ohio State Spring Scarlet 2023English

The competitive floor inside the Recreation and Physical Activity Center RPAC buzzed with constant turning and inspection timers as competitors gathered on April 8, 2023. Solvers adjusted their gear at the competition stations, ready for a full schedule across six distinct puzzles. The Columbus, Ohio, USA venue served as the battleground for forty-nine cubers striving for top marks across thirteen rounds of action. With every table occupied, the atmosphere reflected the sheer intensity of a dedicated cubing competition in the heart of the Midwest.

When the final rounds concluded, the host nation established complete supremacy by claiming all eighteen podium positions available throughout the day. Across six official events, United States competitors locked down every single top-three placing without yielding a single spot. Leading that collective surge was Luke Garrett, whose remarkable versatility secured him three championship titles and five total podium appearances. Garrett displayed flawless form in the classic 3x3x3 Rubik's Cube, clocking a winning average of 5.35 seconds alongside the day's best single of 4.49 seconds.

Garrett also set the pace in the 2x2x2 Cube, delivering a 1.92 average across three intense rounds after opening with a blisteringly quick 1.14 single. Luke Griesser chased him closely to earn second place with a 2.30 average, while Joe Norton rounded out the podium at 2.80. The 3x3 results told a very similar story of dominance, with Garrett taking first place ahead of Griesser in second with a 6.43 average and Dylan Cossin securing third place with an 8.30 average.

The larger puzzles and specialized events generated just as much drama on the main stage. In the 5x5x5 Cube, Griesser turned the tables by seizing the victory with a 54.78 winning average and a 50.26 single, pushing Garrett into second place at 57.02 and Cossin into third at 1:02.71. Garrett was back atop the standings in Clock, posting a 5.57 winning mark to edge out Mason Langenderfer at 7.61 and Harsha Paladugu at 7.80. Meanwhile, Paladugu took top honours in Pyraminx with an exceptional 1.84 average, and Cossin captured the Skewb crown with a 3.33 mark.

Beyond the championship races, Ohio State Spring Scarlet 2023 provided a platform where personal milestones and breakthrough attempts defined the day. Maxton Peek delivered an extraordinary performance by dropping their 2x2x2 Cube personal best by 61.9 percent to 4.69 seconds, while also trimming their Skewb mark down to 9.99 seconds and trying Clock for the first time with a 44.09 finish. Fletch Cloyes shaved 58.1 percent off their Pyraminx best to hit 8.68 seconds and reached a 45.74 personal best in the 3x3x3 Cube, alongside a first official attempt at 2x2x2 Cube of 28.23 seconds. Eli Miller made massive progress as well, lowering their Pyraminx personal best by 29.7 percent to 6.05 seconds and taking on their first 2x2x2 Cube solve with a 10.25 result.

The spirit of speed cubing was equally evident among solvers expanding into new puzzle territory. Patrick Ferguson tackled a massive six events, making first attempts in Pyraminx with 7.68, Skewb with 8.52, and Clock with 36.60. Luke Troxler stepped up across five events to record an initial 3.47 in 2x2x2 Cube, 3.08 in Pyraminx, and 31.83 in Clock, finishing twentieth overall in 3x3x3. Mason Williams entered four events and put down first marks of 5.32 in 2x2x2 Cube, 15.09 in Skewb, and 1:48.21 in 5x5x5 Cube. Benjamin Fox navigated their first WCA competition across six events, posting an 18.71 in 3x3x3 Cube and an 8.40 in Pyraminx, while Killian Jones also debuted at their first competition with an 18.52 in 3x3x3 Cube and a 5.03 in Pyraminx.

A flurry of national marks added further technical significance to the 2x2x2 Cube rounds. Official single and average records were registered by Arjun Srinath, Maxton Peek, Brayden Greathouse, David Iduma-Pina, Mason Langenderfer, Braden Richards, Benjamin Fox, Adam Schwenn, Fletch Cloyes, and Greyson Vore during their respective runs. These marks highlighted the immense technical execution that defined the shorter solve formats throughout the single-day gathering.

As the timers were packed away and the venue cleared, Ohio State Spring Scarlet 2023 stood as a testament to the depth of regional speedcubing talent in 2023. From clean sweeps across every podium to debut solves and massive percentage drops in personal records, the gathering at the RPAC brought out top-tier execution from all forty-nine competitors who took to the solving tables.
