One-Handed Mastery and Multi-Event Brilliance Highlight Northampton Winter A 2023English

Inside the Davis Ballroom on February 25, 2023, the steady rhythm of twisting plastic and the tap of timers set the tone for an intense day of competition. Speedcubing enthusiasts gathered from across the region to test their problem-solving dexterity against the clock. The atmosphere inside the hall was focused and brisk, with competitors studying scrambles and fine-tuning their setups across twelve scheduled rounds of action.

Among the varied disciplines contested at Northampton Winter A 2023, the 3x3x3 One-Handed event stood out as a premier showcase of mechanical discipline. Solving the classic Rubik's Cube with a single hand demands exceptional fingertip dexterity, precise ergonomic table placement, and tailored algorithmic execution. Eben Quenneville mastered these technical challenges across the single-round contest, claiming victory with an average of 16.28 seconds and putting down a sharp best single of 13.63.

The one-handed podium battle remained tightly contested down to the final hundredths of a second. James Donahue captured second place with an average of 17.07 seconds, narrowly holding off Ric Donati, who secured third on the podium with a 17.09 average. Both solvers demonstrated the controlled table-abusing turns and specialized fingertip flicks necessary to keep rotation counts low and execution fluid under intense tournament conditions.

Beyond the single-handed showcase, Elijah Rain Phelps established complete dominance across multiple disciplines at Northampton Winter A 2023. In the marquee 3x3x3 Cube event, Phelps led a 65-competitor field through three rounds to take first place with an 8.00 winning average and a best single of 7.17. Cameron Soulagnet followed in second with an 8.53 average, while Jonah Crosby rounded out the podium at 8.70, delivering competitive 3x3 results to the leaderboard.

Phelps added two more titles to complete a remarkable triple-crown performance in Northampton, Massachusetts, USA. In Pyraminx, Phelps took the top spot with a 4.10 average and a rapid 2.40 single, finishing ahead of Jaylen Myles at 4.20 and Jacob Schwartz at 5.09. Turning to Square-1, Phelps struck gold once again, averaging 9.84 seconds with a 6.77 single to outpace Tommy Szeliga at 11.47 and Aaron Jake Wong at 15.22 across two rounds of play.

Away from the top steps of the podium, several competitors made massive strides and expanded their repertoires during the cubing competition. Maxwell Ryznic shattered his previous personal best in the 3x3x3 Cube with a 19.48 single, outperforming his prior 40.51 mark by 51.9 percent, while also logging a first official Pyraminx solve of 15.78. Josh Sanderson produced a massive 49.1 percent improvement in Pyraminx with a 9.40 personal best, alongside a 42.29 mark in one-handed solving. James Overbaugh trimmed his 3x3x3 Cube best by 43.2 percent down to 16.41 while recording first attempts in both Pyraminx at 8.99 and the 4x4x4 Cube at 1:32.20.

That same spirit of progression defined performances across the roster at Northampton Winter A 2023. Grayson Alvarez slashed his Pyraminx personal best by 41.2 percent to 6.75 while logging a first official 3x3x3 solve of 48.27. David Lei tackled all six events offered, taking sixth place in one-handed and recording first career marks in 5x5x5 Cube at 2:42.89, Pyraminx at 5.91, and Square-1 at 43.65. Hudson Hassan made his WCA competition debut across three events, including an 18.38 single on the 3x3x3 Cube, while Ishaan Maheshkumar also completed his first tournament, logging debut marks in Pyraminx and the main 3x3x3 event.

Big cube specialists also found their footing in the ballroom. Jonah Crosby claimed the 4x4x4 Cube title with a winning average of 26.25 seconds and a single of 25.36, leading Cameron Soulagnet at 29.60 and Derek White at 36.54. Soulagnet then conquered the 5x5x5 Cube event, finishing atop the 23-competitor field with a 54.49 average and a 52.04 single, while Crosby placed second with 1:00.25 and Theo Mayer of Switzerland placed third at 1:12.30.
