Abdelhak Kaddour Sweeps the Big Cubes at Nivelles Bigs 2025English
Inside Collège saint Gertrude, the rhythmic clatter of plastic layers turning at high speeds filled the hall throughout the final weekend of June. Tables were laden with multi-layered puzzles requiring immense mental focus and physical stamina, setting an atmosphere where every turn demanded total concentration. The gathering drew 40 competitors to Nivelles, Belgium for a dedicated big-cube showcase across two intensive days from June 28 to June 29, 2025. Across 15 total rounds, competitors faced some of the most grueling puzzles in modern speedcubing, testing the limits of their patience and dexterity.
Solving larger hardware at a dedicated cubing competition demands far more endurance than standard puzzles. While fans routinely track traditional 3x3 results across the circuit, the heavier 5x5x5 Cube, 6x6x6 Cube, and 7x7x7 Cube require sustained problem-solving across hundreds of individual pieces. Each round at Nivelles Bigs 2025 forced solvers to maintain precise finger execution through long solves where a single misaligned layer can unravel minutes of intricate progress. The weekend highlighted the sheer physical fortitude required to master these massive variations of the classic Rubik's Cube.
France's Abdelhak Kaddour delivered a masterclass across the biggest puzzles on the schedule, taking top honors in three separate disciplines. In the 5x5x5 Cube final, Kaddour secured first place with an average of 52.27 seconds, complemented by a tournament-best single solve of 48.67 seconds across the 34-competitor field. Le-Duy Vu of Belgium claimed the runner-up spot with an average of 56.31, while China's Xi Zhang earned third place with a 59.15 mark. Kaddour's rhythm set a benchmark that defined the upper echelon of the tournament.
The domination continued on the 6x6x6 Cube, where Kaddour locked down the title with a winning average of 1:37.45 and the fastest single of 1:30.20 among 31 entrants. Fellow countryman Étienne Aubry finished second with an average of 1:48.20, while Belgium's Nicolas Dupuis placed third with 1:56.57. Stepping up to the 7x7x7 Cube, Kaddour conquered the 28-player lineup by posting a winning average of 2:28.82 and a single of 2:18.26. Aubry followed in second with 2:38.64, and Dupuis took third in 2:53.58 to mirror their 6x6x6 podium results.
The 4x4x4 Cube delivered one of the closest battles of the entire weekend, engaging 38 competitors across three rounds. Belgium's Le-Duy Vu emerged victorious with an average of 31.45 seconds, anchored by the event's top single solve of 27.55 seconds. Kaddour pushed him to the wire, finishing second with an average of 32.01, while Matthias Schegers of Belgium took third on the podium with an average of 33.11. The contest underscored the depth of regional speed cubing talent.
Beyond the podium battles, several competitors achieved remarkable milestones in the larger events. Vihaan Kembhavi of India contested five events and delivered a 47.1% drop on the 6x6x6 Cube with a personal best of 3:06.40 compared to an earlier 5:52.61, shaved 35.5% off his 5x5x5 Cube mark down to 1:31.53, logged his first ever 7x7x7 Cube solve at 4:24.22, and reached a 12th-place finish. Belgium's Adrien Frenoy took on all five events, posting first-ever official attempts on the 6x6x6 Cube in 5:16.94 and the 7x7x7 Cube in 6:38.23, alongside an 11% improvement on the 5x5x5 Cube at 1:30.61. Elias Hostens also tackled all five events, registering a first 7x7x7 Cube time of 8:45.58 while dropping 25.3% on the 5x5x5 Cube to 1:40.44 and 16.8% on the 6x6x6 Cube to 4:15.70.
Other personal benchmarks highlighted the extensive dedication present throughout the hall. Rayan Koffler of France took on two events, registering a first-ever Megaminx result of 3:31.50 and cutting 13% from his 4x4x4 Cube best down to 1:44.64. Belgium's Tjeu Goossens entered all five disciplines, recording a first official 7x7x7 Cube time of 7:53.26 and a 4.5% improvement on the 4x4x4 Cube at 57.13 seconds. Stig Michielsen logged five events for Belgium, recording a 27.4% improvement on the 6x6x6 Cube with a 3:45.94 mark, a 17.2% cut on the 5x5x5 Cube down to 1:50.76, and a 4.9% drop on the 7x7x7 Cube to 6:54.21.
In the Megaminx event, Germany's Felix Christian Schmidt captured the top step of the podium among 30 solvers, averaging 42.59 seconds with a best single of 38.09. Belgium's Victoria Géonet secured second place with an average of 45.89, while compatriot Justin Vinckenbosch took third with 50.14. The competition wrapped up with Belgium claiming 7 podium finishes, France taking 6, and Germany and China securing one each, concluding a memorable WCA competition at Nivelles Bigs 2025.
