Memory Masters and Community Bonds Take Center Stage at Nittedal Mental Breakdown 2024English
Inside NIL-huset på Nittedal, the atmosphere was defined as much by shared focus as by quiet fellowship. Tables were lined with sleep masks, memo sheets, and stopwatches as twenty-eight competitors gathered across April 13 and April 14 for a specialized program of blindfolded and analytical disciplines. Between rounds, participants sat shoulder to shoulder, comparing memorization schemes and reviewing solution steps. This tight-knit speedcubing community turned the sports hall into a hub of collective concentration, demonstrating how a demanding cubing competition brings people together over complex mechanical puzzles.
The weekend schedule in Nittedal, Norway centered on the purest memory and efficiency tests the World Cube Association sanctions. Across seven rounds and five events, the gathering showcased the full mental spectrum of speed cubing. Rather than conventional turning speed, success here required deep analytical thinking and flawless recall. Solvers tackled everything from blindfolded Rubik's Cube attempts to hour-long Fewest Moves challenges, creating an environment where peer support and technical collaboration remained constant from the opening scramble to the final podium presentations.
Hari Anirudh of India delivered a standout performance in the blindfolded disciplines, claiming victories in both three-layer and big cube blind solving. In 3x3x3 Blindfolded, Anirudh secured the top spot with a final round single of 32.77 seconds, leading a podium that included Willem Klose of Germany in second place at 34.15 and Bernhard Brodowsky of Germany in third with 53.71. Across the earlier rounds, Anirudh also posted an exceptional single of 21.80 seconds alongside an average of 25.70 seconds. The 3x3 results in this event reflected a remarkably deep field of twenty-five entrants.
Anirudh repeated his winning form in 4x4x4 Blindfolded, taking first place with a single solve of 4:17.12. The event demanded prolonged memorization of complex edge and corner pieces, where a single miscalculation leads to an unsolved puzzle. Brodowsky followed closely behind in second position with a time of 4:22.25, while Mikus Lembergs of Latvia rounded out the podium in third place after registering a time of 6:13.02 among fifteen competitors.
Jan Bentlage of Germany proved equally dominant across the remaining three disciplines, collecting three gold finishes. In 3x3x3 Fewest Moves, Bentlage solved the standard cube with superior efficiency, averaging 26.00 moves over the contest with a single best of 25. Jakob Jernsletten of Norway took the runner-up spot with an average of 27.67 moves, and Klose earned third place with an average of 29.00. Bentlage also mastered 5x5x5 Blindfolded, recording a winning single of 12:05.00, with Klose taking second at 12:48.00 and Lembergs securing third in 14:37.00.
The 3x3x3 Multi-Blind event brought another high-stakes challenge to the floor, as competitors attempted multiple cubes from memory within a strict time limit. Bentlage captured his third title of the competition by successfully solving 22 out of 23 cubes in 54:48. Klose secured second place with 22 out of 27 cubes in 59:02, while Lembergs posted a flawless 14 out of 14 cubes in 53:06 to claim third. Together, German competitors earned nine total podium positions over the course of the tournament.
Beyond the top podium steps, the gathering provided a stage for remarkable individual progress that the final standings often conceal. Jonathan Björck Fodstad took on three events and delivered a massive leap in 3x3x3 Blindfolded, setting a new personal best of 1:33.63, which was 55.7 percent faster than his prior mark of 3:31.34, alongside achieving a best finish of 10th and completing his first ever attempt at 3x3x3 Multi-Blind with 4/4 in 30:43. Teodor Strømstad Tidemann entered one event and achieved a 3x3x3 Blindfolded personal best of 3:28.47, cutting 45.5 percent off his previous 6:22.80 record. André Raunehaug also made great strides across two events, recording a 3x3x3 Blindfolded personal best of 1:39.47, a 30 percent improvement over his earlier 2:22.18 best, while finishing 11th.
First attempts at demanding events highlighted the ambition present throughout the weekend. Jakob Solberg Holm took on three events and completed his first ever attempt at 3x3x3 Fewest Moves with a count of 45, his first ever attempt at 3x3x3 Multi-Blind with a perfect 3/3 in 22:36, and his first ever attempt at 3x3x3 Blindfolded in 3:25.02, reaching a best finish of 17th in Multi-Blind. Raphael Riener tackled four events and earned a best finish of 9th in 3x3x3 Blindfolded, while Magnus Meling-Raunehaug competed in two events, earning a best finish of 21st in 3x3x3 Multi-Blind.
When the final timers were cleared at NIL-huset på Nittedal, the competitors packed away their cubes having shared an intense two days of problem-solving. Nittedal Mental Breakdown 2024 proved to be a classic showcase of mental endurance, celebrating both veteran expertise and major personal breakthroughs. As the 2024 season continues, the bonds formed over these challenging memory puzzles will remain a defining memory for all twenty-eight participants who took to the tables.
