Blindfolded Focus and Triple Gold Highlight NIT Trichy Cube Open 2023English

Twenty-two competitors stepped up to face the ultimate test of memory and spatial awareness in the 3x3x3 Blindfolded event at the NIT Trichy Cube Open 2023. Solving without sight requires complete mental discipline, demanding that a solver study a scrambled puzzle, commit every piece to memory, pull on a blindfold, and execute complex algorithms entirely in the dark. In a discipline where even a single misplaced turn results in a disqualified attempt, Mohamed Bilal delivered the standout performance of the event. Bilal secured first place for India with a best single time of 1:13.13, holding off Abhiram Narasimha, who placed second in 1:58.50, and Anirudh Narasimhan, who took third with a solve of 2:10.80.

Held at the NIT Trichy venue in Trichy, Tamil Nadu, India on November 5, 2023, the single-day WCA competition brought together 74 competitors across five official events and eight rounds. The gathering highlighted the breadth of modern speedcubing, offering everything from rapid-fire solves to intricate memory work. The blindfolded event set a tone of quiet intensity early in the schedule, but as the tables cleared for speed events, the atmosphere shifted to pure velocity across the varied categories.

Beyond his memory-based victory, Mohamed Bilal also made waves in the Pyraminx event, earning a spot on the podium by claiming third place with an average of 3.26 seconds. The four-sided puzzle contest was won by Viswath Kumaraa Kesavaraj, who captured the title with a swift 2.39 average and an event-best single of 1.55 seconds across two rounds of play involving 52 participants. Rajha Sirokshan took second place on the Pyraminx podium with a 2.94 average, completing a podium sweep for India.

The broader story of the tournament belonged to Saseeth Srilok Majeti, who orchestrated a dominant run across three separate categories. In the traditional 3x3x3 Cube, the centerpiece of any cubing competition, Majeti topped a 74-person field with a winning average of 8.22 seconds in the final round. Majeti held off Akhil Vikram of Canada, who finished in second place with an 8.43 average, and Hari A. Deepak, who took third with an 8.54 average. Deepak also produced the fastest single solve of the entire main event at 6.75 seconds.

Majeti expanded his gold tally by taking command of the larger cubes and specialized categories. In the 4x4x4 Cube, Majeti secured first place with an average of 37.03 seconds and a best single solve of 35.55 seconds over 41 competitors. Sujai Shakthivel followed in second place with an average of 40.92 seconds, while Sharun Rajeev Sundar secured third with a 41.45 average. Majeti then added a third victory in 3x3x3 One-Handed, averaging 12.93 seconds to finish ahead of Shakthivel, who took second in 16.62 seconds, and Imruthun Meenakshisundaram, who finished third with an average of 16.63 seconds.

Away from the top of the podium, the scoreboards revealed substantial progress from participants throughout the field. Bharani Kishore took on four events, dropping their Pyraminx personal best to 13.39 seconds, an improvement of 58 percent compared to their previous 31.90 mark. Sidharth RS contested four categories, posting a first ever attempt at 4x4x4 Cube in 1:25.92 and slicing 42.1 percent off their Pyraminx personal best down to 5.65 seconds. Thanush Vel recorded a 6.32 mark in their first ever attempt at Pyraminx alongside a 3x3x3 Cube personal best of 21.11 seconds, which was 38.1 percent faster than their prior best. Soham Chouhan took on two events, registering a first ever attempt at 3x3x3 One-Handed of 24.82 seconds and improving their 3x3x3 Cube personal best by 32 percent to 13.70 seconds.

The breakthrough performances continued with Manibalagan Selvaraj, who logged a first ever attempt at 3x3x3 Blindfolded with a 9:21.76 completion on the way to a 12th-place finish, alongside a 19.4 percent Pyraminx personal best improvement of 9.03 seconds. Nimal Kesavan entered four events, posting a 13th-place finish in 3x3x3 Blindfolded, logging a first ever attempt at 3x3x3 One-Handed in 1:25.98, and dropping their 3x3x3 Cube mark by 17.6 percent to 16.64 seconds. Bhuvaneshwar R took on four events, completing a first ever attempt at Pyraminx in 7.92 seconds and cutting their 4x4x4 Cube personal best by 16.2 percent to 1:46.30. Aadarkovel Elamurugu Suji also contested four events, logging a first ever attempt at 3x3x3 One-Handed in 38.54 seconds and a first ever attempt at 4x4x4 Cube in 1:58.51.

The 3x3 results from both rounds showcased notable depth across the roster, with multiple solvers establishing strong personal marks on the classic Rubik's Cube throughout the day. Competitors pushed the limits of turning efficiency on every solve, highlighting how speed cubing continues to advance across the region. Across all five events, Indian competitors captured 14 podium positions, alongside one podium finish for Canada.

As the final timers were packed away, the NIT Trichy Cube Open 2023 concluded a packed schedule that celebrated both the extreme concentration of blindfolded solving and the sheer quickness of standard speed events. With competitors having logged official milestones and personal records across multiple puzzles, the event stands as another successful chapter for the cubing community in Tamil Nadu as participants look ahead to the next season of competition.
