United States Competitors Clean Sweep Podiums at Niner Nation Open 2023English

Fifteen podium positions were up for grabs across five different events, and every single top-three medal stayed on home soil. Held on January 15, 2023, the Niner Nation Open 2023 brought 73 competitors to Charlotte, North Carolina, USA, for an intense one-day showcase. Hosted inside the UNC Charlotte Popp Martin Student Union, the tournament ran across 11 fast-paced rounds. The all-American podium lockout showcased remarkable consistency, as top-tier solvers traded podium places from the classic Rubik's Cube to specialized secondary disciplines throughout the day.

The premier 3x3x3 Cube event drew all 73 competitors into action through three full rounds of head-to-head solving. In the final, Kerry Creech captured the title with a winning average of 7.16 seconds, having also set the tournament's fastest mark with a best single of 6.41 seconds. Ashten Jampayas earned second place with an average of 7.79 seconds, while Nicolás Sánchez rounded out the top three with a 7.95 average. These decisive 3x3 results underscored the level of excellence present on the main stage.

Nicolás Sánchez produced a standout victory in the 2x2x2 Cube, topping a field of 72 entrants across two rounds. Sánchez posted an unmatched winning average of 1.49 seconds alongside a best single of 1.39 seconds. Zachary Ochs secured the silver medal with an average of 1.75 seconds, while Creech added another piece of hardware to his collection by placing third with a 1.98 average. The fast-paced category highlighted how tight margins can be in modern speed cubing.

Big cubes brought high drama, led by Katie Hull in the 4x4x4 Cube. Hull navigated two rounds against 59 competitors to take first place, logging a winning average of 28.04 seconds and a best single of 27.15 seconds. Sánchez took his second individual medal of the day by securing runner-up honors with a 29.68 average, and Jampayas followed closely in third place at 30.58 seconds. Hull's composed turning proved decisive in capturing the 4x4 crown.

In the Clock event, 47 entrants contested two rounds where Vishwa Sankar emerged victorious with a winning average of 4.63 seconds and a best single of 4.09 seconds. Creech continued his prolific day by taking second place with an average of 5.21 seconds, followed by Jacob Ambrose in third at 5.53 seconds. Meanwhile, Square-1 concluded with Zachary Ochs taking the top spot among 41 solvers, securing the win with a 9.54 winning average and a 7.38 best single, ahead of Creech in second at 12.00 and Hull in third at 12.35.

Beyond the podium finishes, the Niner Nation Open 2023 featured massive personal milestones for competitors pushing their limits. Lars Trinks entered five events and recorded a huge personal best in 2x2x2 Cube of 2.92 seconds, which was 63.5 percent faster than his prior mark, while also posting a 46.68 in his first ever attempt at Square-1. Bryce Porras took on five events, improving his 4x4x4 Cube personal best to 1:37.64 to shave 36 percent off his previous time, alongside a first ever attempt at Clock with 16.47 seconds. Logan Keodara made a first ever attempt at 2x2x2 Cube with a 6.24 and lowered his 3x3x3 Cube personal best to 23.96, which was 33.1 percent faster.

That drive across the field was just as apparent in solvers stepping up to tackle fresh events. William Vandergrift entered five categories, registering a first ever attempt at 4x4x4 Cube of 1:03.02 and a first ever attempt at Clock of 15.73. Isaac Lennard achieved a best finish of 9th in Square-1 with a first ever attempt of 16.51 seconds. Samuel Rogers scored a 3x3x3 Cube personal best of 13.10 seconds, beating his old time by 30.4 percent, while Alexander Arkley completed a first ever attempt at 4x4x4 Cube in 1:22.90. Asa McDorman took on four events in his very first WCA competition, recording a first ever attempt at 3x3x3 Cube of 20.06 seconds.

The energy across the venue reaffirmed the strength of local speedcubing communities as the 2023 season kicked into gear. With 11 completed rounds packed into a single day of action, the gathering provided an ideal platform for both seasoned competitors and first-time entrants. The Niner Nation Open 2023 set a vibrant benchmark for North Carolina solvers heading into future regional tournaments.
