Specialists Shine Across Alternate Disciplines at New Braunfels Comal Cubing Classic 2026English

Inside the New Braunfels Civic & Convention Center, the tables were arranged for an intense day of competition across five varied disciplines. Stacks of specialized puzzles lined the staging area as judges prepared timing mats and stopwatches. Competitors traded inspection tips and warmed up their fingers, filling the hall with rhythmic clatter before the opening calls began.

While standard cubes often dominate headlines, the New Braunfels Comal Cubing Classic 2026 put non-traditional puzzles directly into the spotlight. Across eleven rounds of action, 71 competitors gathered in New Braunfels, Texas, USA on February 1, 2026, navigating everything from the triangular geometry of the Pyraminx to the corner-turning dynamics of the Skewb.

Ryan Pilat mounted a masterclass in the side events, capturing first place across multiple formats. In the Pyraminx, Pilat paced a field of 52 entrants by delivering a winning average of 2.59 seconds alongside the best single of the event at 1.62. Alina Zhu claimed the runner-up spot with an average of 2.63, while Don Daniels rounded out the top three at 2.74.

The Skewb bracket delivered equally brisk action for the 42 competitors who took to the stations. Pilat once again took the top step on the podium, posting a 4.34 winning average and an event-best single of 2.81. Austin Sanchez secured second place with a mark of 4.50, closely followed by Gideon Dalum in third with 5.10.

The big cubes demanded sustained focus and deep efficiency. Pilat secured the 4x4x4 Cube title with a 28.93 average, holding off Tristan Patrick at 35.55 and Dalum at 38.04. In the 5x5x5 Cube, Pilat completed a dominant run with a 49.74 average, followed on the podium by Rune Thomas Coulbourne at 1:00.96 and Dalum at 1:05.78.

Beyond the hardware, the competition was defined by breakthrough milestones across the roster. Evan Garza tackled five events, recording his first official attempt at Skewb in 7.05 seconds and dropping his Pyraminx personal best to 5.37, an improvement of 61.6 percent over his previous mark of 13.99. Steven Cooke shaved 55.2 percent off his Pyraminx best down to 5.61 and reduced his 3x3x3 mark by 29.4 percent to 19.81. Justin Roth cut his Pyraminx record by 35.9 percent down to 3.28 and took his 5x5x5 best down to 2:06.84, while Geoffrey Munoz dropped his Pyraminx personal best by 37.4 percent to 4.45.

Fresh debuts also made a significant impact on the floor. First-time speedcubing competitor Jack Hagerman stepped up for his debut WCA competition, logging his first official Skewb attempt in 8.47 seconds and a 3x3x3 mark of 18.03. Kaleb A. Musquiz made his tournament debut across five events, notching a 36.37 in the classic Rubik's Cube and a 24.83 in Skewb. Jackson Light posted an 18.12 on the main cube and a 5.52 on Pyraminx in his first tournament, while Zachary Webb logged his first 5x5x5 attempt in 1:34.87 and cut his 4x4x4 best by 27.9 percent to 43.83.

The 3x3 results capped the day as 69 solvers navigated three full rounds of traditional speed cubing. Alina Zhu took the championship with a winning average of 6.44 and a best single of 6.11, while Pilat placed second at 6.70 and Dalum finished third at 9.08. With 15 total podium places swept by United States competitors, the New Braunfels Comal Cubing Classic 2026 closed as a remarkable showcase of diverse puzzle solving.
