Pilat Sweeps Nine Titles as Rahn Claws to Narrow 2x2 Victory in NebraskaEnglish

Inside Prichard Auditorium, timers clicked in rapid succession across rows of competition tables as judges tracked every turn and stop. The spacious hall in Falls City, Nebraska, USA, provided the backdrop for three days of intense solving from March 31 to April 2, 2023. Speedcubers of varying experience levels gathered to test their skills across 17 official disciplines, filling the room with steady mechanical rhythms from early morning heats to late afternoon finals.

The fiercest contest of the entire Nebraska Heartland Warmup 2023 arrived in the 2x2x2 Cube final, where margins were reduced to mere fractions of a second. Nathan Rahn secured the gold medal with a winning average of 2.37 seconds, narrowly staying ahead of Walker Welch, who took second place at 2.52 seconds. Alexander Gager finished right on their heels in third with a 2.69 average. With only thirty-two hundredths of a second separating first from third place, the event delivered the tightest podium battle across the entire cubing competition schedule.

Rahn added a second title to his weekend tally in the Skewb event, posting a winning average of 4.35 seconds to top the 50-person bracket. Meanwhile, the classic 3x3x3 Cube competition drew 90 competitors through three rounds of action. Ryan Pilat claimed victory with a 6.93 winning average and set the lowest single time of the event at 6.01 seconds. Alexander Gager took second place with a 9.34 average, while Walker Welch claimed third place with a 9.51 average, rounding out the official 3x3 results.

Beyond his 3x3 triumph, Ryan Pilat produced a massive haul of victories throughout the Nebraska Heartland Warmup 2023. He captured first place in 4x4x4 Cube with a 28.21 average and won 3x3x3 One-Handed with a 12.75 average, defeating Walker Welch and Daniel Mullen on both podiums. Pilat also topped 5x5x5 Cube in 55.63 seconds, Megaminx in 52.14 seconds, Square-1 in 7.75 seconds, 6x6x6 Cube in 1:48.90, and 7x7x7 Cube in 2:40.65, demonstrating remarkable versatility across every standard puzzle size.

Pilat extended his winning reach into the memory disciplines at this WCA competition, taking the 3x3x3 Blindfolded crown with a best single of 28.74 seconds. He followed with top marks in 4x4x4 Blindfolded at 3:18.16 and 5x5x5 Blindfolded at 12:04.00, completing an extraordinary run across nine separate events. Evan Brown broke through on the strategy front, claiming the 3x3x3 Fewest Moves title with a single of 28 moves, just edging Welch at 29 moves, while Chris Van Der Brink swept Pyraminx in 3.15 seconds and Clock in 6.48 seconds.

Away from the top of the podiums, the Nebraska Heartland Warmup 2023 featured tremendous individual milestones from competitors throughout the hall. Brendan Simoens logged a 70.3 percent improvement in Clock with a new personal best of 12.80 seconds, dropped his Skewb mark by 69.9 percent to 3.75 seconds, and finished 6th in 3x3x3 Multi-Blind. Mickey Doyle cut 65.5 percent off his Skewb record with a 5.09 solve and made his first ever attempt at 3x3x3 One-Handed with a 58.75. Christian Tanhueco lowered his Skewb best by 64.9 percent down to 4.45 and took his first attempt at Pyraminx, while Bodie Ardinger Stibal trimmed his Skewb best by 61.1 percent to 4.57.

The progress continued with Tanner Jackson improving his 2x2x2 Cube personal record by 55.9 percent to 2.30 seconds and taking on his first Clock attempt at 25.77. Gavin Leifker reduced his Square-1 best by 51.4 percent down to 31.21 seconds while tackling his first official 4x4x4 Cube solve in 1:33.00. Owen Ash entered 10 events, finishing 7th in Fewest Moves and completing his first attempts in 7x7x7 Cube at 5:23.96 and 6x6x6 Cube at 3:35.19. Taking on their first speed cubing appearances, Riley Rath tackled 12 events including a 16.12 3x3x3 Cube solve, while Claire Burton entered 8 events with a 9.32 Skewb attempt.

The multi-cube memory contest capped the weekend drama, as Walker Welch solved 9 out of 9 puzzles in 52:21 to claim the 3x3x3 Multi-Blind gold medal ahead of Coleton Pleiss and Daniel Mullen. Across 30 rounds of speedcubing, 95 competitors pushed their limits on the standard Rubik's Cube and varied geometric twisty puzzles alike. When the tables were cleared in Falls City, the Nebraska Heartland Warmup 2023 concluded as a showcase of narrow podium finishes, multi-event dominance, and personal breakthroughs across the board.
