Community Camaraderie and Specialist Solves at Naticube Side n' Blind 2024English
Sixteen competitors gathered in Natick, Massachusetts, USA, on December 14, 2024, for an intimate day of speedcubing that highlighted the tight-knit bonds of the community. Hosted at the Whitney Place at Natick - SALMON Health and Retirement, Naticube Side n' Blind 2024 placed non-traditional puzzles and memory challenges at center stage. With a focused group of dedicated enthusiasts sharing tables, comparing notes, and tracking each other through eight rounds across seven distinct disciplines, the atmosphere reflected the uniquely collaborative spirit that defines a close-quarters WCA competition.
The specialised lineup allowed niche events to shine throughout the schedule. Rather than standard speed solves dominating the floor, competitors engaged across an array of puzzles that tested everything from fingertip dexterity on geometric shapes to profound mental endurance. The mutual encouragement between attempts created a welcoming environment where participants alternated between competing, judging, and supporting peers through demanding disciplines. For fans following the broader scene beyond standard 3x3 results, the Natick meeting offered a pure celebration of side challenges and blindfolded solving in the 2024 season.
Blindfolded events require intense concentration and precise mental maps, and Vishwanath Jeyaraman delivered the standout showing in the 3x3x3 Blindfolded category. Across two rounds of play, Jeyaraman secured first place with a rapid winning single of 24.42 seconds, having also posted a 26.38 single in the preliminary stage. Michael Lee claimed second place on the podium with a single of 3:37.08, while Zachary Miller rounded out the top three following a DNF outcome in the final round after charting a 2:22.21 single earlier in the day.
The larger blindfolded puzzles tested pure stamina and precision, with Caleb Retik emerging as a dominant force. In the 3x3x3 Multi-Blind event, Retik captured victory by successfully solving 10 out of 13 cubes in a time of 57:02. Rowe Hessler followed in second place with 38 out of 70 cubes in exactly 1:00:00, while Viktor Pearl earned third place with a flawless 5 out of 5 cubes in 31:36. Retik continued his strong memory form in the 5x5x5 Blindfolded discipline, taking the title with a single of 19:17.00 ahead of Michael Lee at 29:32.00 and Daniel Winterberg at 31:14.00.
Beyond the memory marathons, Viktor Pearl delivered an exceptional multi-event display across the day. Pearl secured first place in the 4x4x4 Blindfolded event as the lone competitor to record a successful time, clocking a winning single of 15:25.00. Transitioning seamlessly to sighted speed cubing, Pearl also topped the field in the 5x5x5 Cube, finishing with a winning average of 1:06.67 and the best single mark of 1:02.37. Alex Cohen secured second place in the 5x5x5 Cube with an average of 1:20.46, and Tommy Szeliga took third with 1:25.98.
Away from the top steps of the podium, several personal milestones highlighted the quiet progression happening across the field. Jacob Michael Wieland took on Pyraminx and delivered a massive step forward, registering a personal best of 8.22 seconds to improve on his previous mark of 10.93 by 24.8 percent on the way to a 10th-place finish. Jonah Mathew entered four events on the day and recorded significant progress in two of them, taking 7th in Pyraminx with a personal best of 5.10 seconds that was 23.8 percent faster than his prior best of 6.69, while also securing a 5x5x5 Cube personal best of 2:08.00.
First-time event explorations also provided major talking points during the afternoon rounds. Mark Duval took on two events at the competition, marking his first ever official attempt at Skewb with a time of 17.54 seconds alongside his first ever attempt at 5x5x5 Cube, where he recorded a time of 3:06.73 to secure a 10th-place finish. Syed Mekaeel Ghani brought extensive experience to the venue, taking on three events across the schedule and achieving a best finish of 11th place in the 5x5x5 Cube to round out a productive individual outing.
The side events concluded with fast-paced action on the Pyraminx and Skewb, where short solve times kept the table judges active. In Pyraminx, Matthew Jalkut captured the title with a winning average of 3.26 seconds and a best single of 2.52, edging out Viktor Pearl at 3.98 seconds and Justin Lee at 5.15 seconds. Justin Lee rebounded in Skewb to claim first place with an average of 3.55 seconds and a single of 3.15, leading Viktor Pearl at 4.94 seconds and Giulio Beniamino Ciampa at 5.68 seconds on the podium.
With awards distributed and equipment packed away, Naticube Side n' Blind 2024 demonstrated how small-scale gatherings foster deep connections across the puzzle community. The shared experiences between seasoned specialists and dedicated participants navigating new events reinforced the supportive culture at the heart of any cubing competition. As participants concluded their 2024 calendar in Natick, the focus shifted toward taking the progress, technical insights, and memories built with fellow Rubik's Cube solvers forward into the next year of competition.
