Chilean Solvers Sweep the Podiums at Montealegre Open 2023 in ValparaísoEnglish

Sebastián Yuste Lucero delivered a remarkable blindfolded double victory in Valparaíso, capturing top honors in both standard 3x3x3 Blindfolded and 4x4x4 Blindfolded. His single of 39.77 seconds in the three-layered blind event and a 6:35.61 average in the big-cube memory discipline established the benchmark for the one-day gathering. That performance spearheaded an overwhelming showing by local talent across the entire slate of events on January 8, 2023. Domestic competitors secured twenty-four out of the total podium positions awarded at Teatro Montealegre.

The Montealegre Open 2023 brought together 75 competitors tackling 7 events across 11 rounds of intense Rubik's Cube action. Across seven disciplines, Chilean competitors claimed clean sweeps on five distinct podiums, leaving very little room for international challengers. Morocco collected two podium placements courtesy of Badr Ait Belaid, who took second in 3x3x3 Blindfolded with a 59.36 single, while Colombia earned a joint third in 4x4x4 Blindfolded. Beyond those exceptions, the host nation dictated the tempo throughout the entire cubing competition.

In the classic 3x3x3 Cube, Felipe Medel claimed the championship title through three rounds featuring 73 competitors. Medel posted a winning average of 7.65 seconds alongside a best single of 7.28 to secure the victory. The 3x3 results saw Irenco Peña Henríquez take second place with an 8.20 average, while Claudio Matias Cancino Bruna finished third at 8.41. The final round proved to be a pure showcase of elite speedcubing technique and poise under pressure.

Claudio Matias Cancino Bruna had earlier topped the field in the 4x4x4 Cube, managing a 33.09 average with a best single solve of 28.58 to hold off Medel and Peña Henríquez. In the 2x2x2 Cube, Jose Basaes averaged 2.58 seconds across two rounds of play to take first place, ahead of Cristóbal Opazo Bravo and Peña Henríquez. Maximiliano Perez Madrid captured the Pyraminx title with a 2.86 winning mark, while Michael Fonseca earned gold in Clock with a 6.53 average ahead of Opazo Bravo.

Beyond the championship finals, the floor saw substantial progress from competitors across multiple disciplines. Cristóbal Isla Tejo shaved considerable time from his previous marks, recording a 2x2x2 personal best of 8.31 seconds, which was 64.7 percent faster than his prior standard, alongside a 26.57 single in 3x3x3 that improved by 40.3 percent. Matias Cardemil Guzman made significant gains as well, posting a 4.48 in 2x2x2 to better his earlier best by 59.9 percent and a 17.33 in 3x3x3, cutting 41.7 percent off his past mark. Jesús Uzcanga tackled two events and notched a 2x2x2 single of 3.68, an improvement of 57.4 percent, while putting down a 21.93 in 3x3x3.

Several competitors embraced brand new challenges at the WCA competition by logging their first official attempts. Gary Rojas entered four events, finishing tenth in Clock and registering first marks of 9.07 in 2x2x2, 15.07 in Pyraminx, and 27.95 in Clock. Bastian Pino logged first attempts of 4.71 in 2x2x2, 13.69 in Pyraminx, and 1:12.43 in 4x4x4 on the way to 35th in that bracket. Ignacio Sebastian Quezada Duran tackled four events, recording a 1:29.55 in 4x4x4, a 7.40 in Pyraminx, and an 18.76 personal best in 3x3x3 that was 17 percent faster. Mateo Vucina logged a 6.04 in 2x2x2, a 14.63 in Pyraminx, and dropped his 3x3x3 best by 34.5 percent to 13.65. Moisés Leftraru Parra Vega took on four events, adding a 14.60 in Pyraminx, a 5.84 in 2x2x2, and a 14.73 in 3x3x3.

The technical depth in Valparaíso, Chile, was also visible in the blindfolded events. Sebastián Yuste Lucero and Joaquín Hernan Sandoval Reyes completed valid averages in 4x4x4 Blindfolded, finishing first and second respectively, while seven other entrants recorded DNFs in the grueling event. Sandoval Reyes also earned third in 3x3x3 Blindfolded, logging 1:15.62 behind Yuste Lucero and Morocco's Badr Ait Belaid. Memorisation and execution under the blindfold proved a major separator on the single-day schedule.

The gathering at Teatro Montealegre concluded with 24 podium spots going to the home nation, highlighting the vitality of local speed cubing in 2023. From the lightning-fast turns of the 2x2x2 Cube to the calculated patience required for blindfolded solving, the tournament delivered outstanding momentum for the season ahead. The Montealegre Open 2023 established a high standard for regional contests, showing both deep podium contention and extensive personal progress throughout the ranks.
