Seth Ferry Dominates Mildura Madness 2023 Across Four Demanding EventsEnglish

Inside the sports hall at the Irymple Community Leisure Centre, the atmosphere was defined by steady focus, rhythmic clicking of plastic, and the tense silence that falls whenever a solver pulls down a blindfold. Over the weekend of December 2 to December 3, thirty-six competitors gathered in Mildura, Victoria, Australia to test their skills across seven events and fifteen total rounds. Speedcubing enthusiasts arrived ready to push their personal limits on the timers, knowing that every split second on the mat could reshape the standings.

The inherent tension of timed solving is never sharper than in rounds governed by strict formats where a single mistake carries a heavy price. In the 3x3x3 Blindfolded event, where solvers must commit the puzzle to memory before donning an eye cover, there is no safety net of counting averages if mistakes occur. Putian Ye navigated the high-stakes discipline to claim the title with a winning single of 1:19.75, finishing ahead of Alex Butera at 1:38.99 and Dallas McNeil at 1:46.30 in a contest where completing a clean run without a DNF meant everything.

Beyond the blindfolded drama, Seth Ferry emerged as the central figure of Mildura Madness 2023 by collecting four distinct victories across the weekend. In the premier Rubik's Cube category, Ferry topped the 3x3 results by capturing the final with a 7.95 winning average and a best single of 6.84. Oliver Hutchinson secured second place with an average of 10.02, while Putian Ye earned third with 10.43 to round out the podium in a competitive 36-person field.

Ferry carried that precision directly into the 3x3x3 One-Handed event, taking top honors with a 13.63 average and a single of 11.67 across two rounds of play. Putian Ye finished in second position with an 18.42 average, while Matthew Sieredzinski captured third with 20.00. Ferry further proved his versatility on the larger puzzles, winning the 4x4x4 Cube with a 34.69 average and an event-best single of 30.61, beating out Leo Hock-Morris at 39.14 and Sieredzinski at 39.66.

The 2023 regional fixture also brought rapid action on the auxiliary puzzles. In the 2x2x2 Cube, Alex Butera secured the victory with a 2.83 average, edging out Ferry who finished second at 2.96, while Putian Ye placed third with 3.72. Oliver Hutchinson claimed the top spot in Pyraminx with a 4.06 winning average, finishing just ahead of Nathan Nairn at 4.22 and Nicholas Penfold at 6.66. Ferry then added his fourth triumph in Megaminx, posting a winning average of 50.58 ahead of Miles Fetherston and Butera.

Beyond the podium battles at this speed cubing showcase, the weekend served as a proving ground for several rising solvers achieving major personal milestones. Aston Culf delivered an extraordinary leap in 3x3x3 Blindfolded, clocking a personal best of 1:52.32, which was 48 percent faster than his previous mark, while also shaving 23.5 percent off his one-handed best with a 15.91 solve. Michael Patton improved his 3x3x3 Cube time by 21.9 percent to 1:08.23 and knocked 12.5 percent off his Pyraminx record to 13.74, while also recording his first ever attempt in 2x2x2 Cube at 27.40.

Several other competitors showed tremendous dedication across packed event schedules at the cubing competition. Liam Wood dropped 19.9 percent off his one-handed best with a time of 20.91, while Charlie Fry lowered his 2x2x2 Cube best by 18.3 percent to 2.41. Rebecca Penfold logged her first ever attempt at 4x4x4 Cube with a time of 1:25.39, while Flynn Schleicher completed his first official one-handed solve at 1:03.65. Taking on heavy loads, Aaron Mi registered his first ever Megaminx mark of 2:35.22, and Noah Przychodzen logged his first official Megaminx result of 1:41.49 across seven entered disciplines.

The full schedule at Mildura Madness 2023 demonstrated the depth of talent emerging from the Australian circuit, with local competitors taking 17 podium places alongside 4 by Chinese solvers. From first-time competitors stepping onto the official stage to veterans managing the intense psychological pressure of mean-of-three and blindfolded attempts, the gathering highlighted the focus and technique required at every tier of a WCA competition. As the year drew toward its conclusion, the weekend provided an enduring showcase of speedcubing skill and sportsmanship across every round.
