Bernardo Torres Dominates Through Multi-Round Progression at Micentro Funza 2024English
Bernardo Torres delivered the defining display of the weekend by capturing three separate titles, punctuated by an emphatic 8.80 winning average in the main event. Held at Centro Comercial Micentro on August 24, 2024, Micentro Funza 2024 brought 31 competitors to Funza, Cundinamarca, Colombia for an intensive one-day schedule. Across 5 events, organizers staged a demanding 15 rounds in total, challenging participants to maintain composure through progressive cuts. The rigorous three-round format in every discipline placed a heavy premium on endurance, rewarding competitors who could consistently execute under the pressure of successive eliminations.
The 3x3x3 Cube competition tested every entrant through those three escalating stages of the Rubik's Cube. Torres led the way in the final round with his 8.80 average, bolstered by a tournament-best single of 6.77 seconds. Santiago Duque maintained steady form to claim second place with an average of 9.31 seconds, while Thomas Cabezas earned the third step on the podium with a 9.96 mark. These standout 3x3 results capped a bracket that required three consecutive rounds of precision, where small errors in earlier stages meant missing the cut for the final table entirely.
Torres continued his mastery across the larger and more complex puzzles on the schedule. In the 4x4x4 Cube, which also utilized a full three-round structure, Torres claimed gold with a decisive 30.66 average and a best single of 29.03. Oscar Nieto followed in second place with a 38.75 average, while Santiago Duque secured third with a 44.31. The exact same trio contested the Megaminx podium, where Torres took first place in 44.30 seconds, well ahead of Duque at 1:05.66 and Nieto at 1:07.33. The multi-stage layout proved especially unforgiving on these larger puzzles, testing physical stamina alongside mental endurance.
While Venezuelan competitor Torres earned 3 podium places across his events, host nation Colombia captured 12 podium spots throughout the cubing competition. The smaller puzzles offered thrilling finishes in their respective finals. Kevin Vanegas Diaz captured the 2x2x2 Cube title with an average of 3.10 seconds, edging out Oscar Nieto who finished second in 3.44 seconds and Dereck Samuel Marin Suarez in third at 3.61. Marin Suarez earned his own gold in Pyraminx, finishing on top with a 4.81 average, just ahead of Dennis Rosero at 5.04 and Vanegas Diaz at 5.21.
Beyond the podium battles, several participants seized the opportunity of multiple rounds to achieve massive personal milestones.
