Haber Edges Vos in 3x3 Blindfolded Thriller at Mental Breakdown Hoorn 2025English

The tables inside the OSG West Friesland sports hall sat in concentrated silence across two days of intense problem solving. Forty competitors gathered in Hoorn, Netherlands on March 8 and 9 to tackle complex disciplines demanding absolute memory and high-level spatial control. Every round at Mental Breakdown Hoorn 2025 pushed participants through long concentration stretches, where single miscalculations could undo whole attempts. The gathering drew specialists from across Europe to test their limits against some of the hardest formats in the sport.

The tightest battle of the entire weekend unfolded in the final round of the 3x3x3 Blindfolded event, where the gold medal was decided by a razor-thin margin of just forty-nine hundredths of a second. Germany's Jens Haber captured first place with an exceptional winning single of 18.50 seconds, narrowly staying ahead of Dutch standout Olivier Vos, who claimed second place in 18.99 seconds. Sebastiano Tronto of Italy completed the podium in third with a time of 33.03. Earlier rounds had already produced stunning speed cubing, with Vos logging a fastest round single of 16.48 seconds and Haber posting an 18.04.

Beyond the dramatic 3x3 results without sight, Sebastiano Tronto established himself as one of the most versatile performers of the entire WCA competition. In 3x3x3 Fewest Moves, Tronto took victory across the field of 30 competitors with an average of 24.67 turns and a best single of 22. Vincent Chan of the Netherlands secured second place with a 27.67 average, while Jérôme Carlier of Belgium took third at 31.00. Tronto continued his dominance in 4x4x4 Blindfolded, claiming another title with a winning single of 3:39.95, ahead of István Kocza of Hungary at 5:33.37 and Romania's Alexandru Ignat at 8:06.74.

Multi-blind memory solving provided another major spectacle across the venue floor. In the 3x3x3 Multi-Blind event, Jorian Meeuse delivered a masterclass for the home nation, successfully solving 40 out of 42 Rubik's Cube puzzles in 57 minutes and 37 seconds to secure victory. Olivier Vos took second place by solving 29 out of 31 cubes in exactly 1:00:00, while Ivo Stoutjesdijk finished third with 29 out of 34 cubes in 54:53. In 5x5x5 Blindfolded, Germany's Katharina Schlomberg stood tall as the sole competitor to log an official solve under nine minutes, winning with a single of 8:53.91, ahead of Tronto's 10:59.00.

On the big cube side of the cubing competition schedule, Marc Tol swept both heavy rotation events with clinical speed. Tol captured the 6x6x6 Cube title across two rounds with a winning average of 1:39.87 and a best single of 1:38.02. Robin Teune took second place with a 1:46.74 average, while Bowen Xie of Belgium claimed third in 1:52.92. Tol followed up with another commanding performance in the 7x7x7 Cube final, averaging 2:33.26 to take top honours ahead of Teune at 2:41.53 and Vos at 2:54.91.

Away from the top of the podium, several competitors achieved meaningful milestones that defined their individual progress across the weekend. Bram van der Wal took on five separate events, achieving a 5th place finish in 3x3x3 Fewest Moves while setting a personal best single of 29 moves, which was 25.6 percent faster than his previous best of 39. Van der Wal also logged his first ever official attempt at 3x3x3 Multi-Blind, scoring 2 out of 4 points in 37:26. Veerle Melis entered three events, recording her first official 7x7x7 Cube attempt at 5:20.20, while taking a 14 percent cut off her Fewest Moves personal best with a 37 and dropping her 6x6x6 best by 8.8 percent to 3:43.23.

The progress continued across all levels of the start list as competitors embraced challenging disciplines. Marc Dullemond entered two events and completed his first ever official 6x6x6 Cube attempt with a time of 4:39.70, alongside a 24th place finish in Fewest Moves. Focco Postmus tackled three events, posting his first ever official 6x6x6 Cube attempt in 3:36.59 and earning a 23rd place finish in Multi-Blind. Jim Steenvoorden entered four disciplines, dropping his Fewest Moves personal best by 11.4 percent to 31 moves on his way to 13th place, while Jaimy van der Heijden completed four events and took 23rd place in Multi-Blind.

Across seven demanding events and 13 total rounds, Mental Breakdown Hoorn 2025 highlighted the depth and stamina required in top-level speedcubing. Dutch solvers led the overall medal haul with 16 podium appearances, supported by international medal runs from Italy, Germany, Hungary, Belgium, and Romania. As the equipment was packed away at OSG West Friesland, the remarkable feats of memory and dexterity in Hoorn set an exceptional benchmark for the 2025 season ahead.
