Ianis Costin Chele Sweeps Big Cubes and Megaminx in BucharestEnglish
Four events and eight rounds of intense big puzzle solving tested the endurance of thirteen competitors in Bucuresti, Romania on January 14, 2024. Staged at Colegiul Tehnologic Viaceslav Harnaj, Mega Big Cubes Bucharest 2024 stripped away standard 3x3 results to focus entirely on larger layers and multi-faceted challenges. In these high-piece-count puzzles, wild single solves rarely guarantee a title. True victory demanded unyielding composure across every round, where metronomic execution and solid averages repeatedly proved superior to flashes of speed.
The showcase 5x5x5 Cube event highlighted how steady pace trumps risky turns. Ianis Costin Chele captured the top step of the podium by securing a winning average of 59.39 seconds, backed by a best single of 55.23 in the final round after earlier setting a 53.72 single and a 1:01.87 average. Runner-up Mihnea Andrei Panţu kept the pressure on throughout the two rounds with a consistent 1:01.76 final average after posting a 1:00.45 single. Matei-Alexandru Ghencea claimed third place on the podium with a disciplined 1:27.55 average.
Chele maintained that same steady rhythm on the twelve-sided Megaminx, navigating twelve competitors through two rounds to take gold. His winning average of 40.11 seconds and top single of 37.02 demonstrated the value of smooth lookahead over erratic burst turning. Vasile Dan secured second place with an average of 1:02.65, holding off Mihnea Andrei Panţu who locked up third place in 1:04.14. The competition proved that navigating complex color patterns requires relentless consistency across all five solves in an average.
The ultra-heavy events further rewarded disciplined pacing at Mega Big Cubes Bucharest 2024. In the 6x6x6 Cube, Chele completed his third victory of the day by recording a winning average of 1:53.84 and a best single of 1:48.14. Mihnea Andrei Panţu earned his third podium of the meet by taking second place with an average of 1:57.90, while Alexandru Ignat rounded out the top three in 2:27.28. The sheer number of inner slices meant that every small mistake multiplied, rewarding those who stayed in control.
The marathon 7x7x7 Cube concluded the podium battles with yet another display of methodical precision. Chele completed an undisputed clean sweep across the entire weekend, winning the event with an average of 2:47.98 and a single of 2:40.61. Mihnea Andrei Panţu maintained his reliable form to take silver in 3:01.13, while Alexandru Ignat stepped onto the podium once again with a bronze-earning average of 3:45.14. Across every discipline, Romanian competitors secured all twelve available podium spots.
Beyond the championship trophies, this cubing competition featured notable personal breakthroughs that defined the spirit of the meeting. Ramy Ștefan Taleb delivered massive leaps forward across his four events, cutting his 5x5x5 Cube personal best down to 1:54.76 to improve by five percent over his prior mark of 2:00.81, and finishing ninth in that event. Taleb also trimmed his 6x6x6 Cube best down to 4:12.98, marking a 4.7 percent improvement from 4:25.51, while notching a Megaminx personal best of 1:43.69.
Other dedicated speed cubing entrants expanded their repertoires by tackling challenging big hardware for the very first time. Matei Corjos took on four events, earning a career best finish of sixth place in Megaminx, logging a 5x5x5 Cube personal best of 1:51.63, and completing a first ever attempt at 6x6x6 Cube in 6:50.14. Cezar Alexandru Dinulescu contested his primary event to log a first ever attempt at 5x5x5 Cube with a time of 3:46.67. Ene Albert Gabriel stepped up across three events, posting a first ever attempt at Megaminx in 3:54.50 and a first ever attempt at 5x5x5 Cube in 4:45.40.
With its intense focus on big layers rather than classic Rubik's Cube sprints, Mega Big Cubes Bucharest 2024 proved that speedcubing stamina and calculated risk management decide major titles. The single-day WCA competition in the Romanian capital set a clear benchmark for discipline and consistency as competitors look ahead to the next season of competitive solving.
