Big Cubes and Long Journeys Collide at Mega Big Cubes Bucharest 2023English

Inside Colegiul Tehnologic Viaceslav Harnaj, tables were neatly aligned and timers readied as a dedicated contingent of speedcubers gathered in Bucuresti, Romania. The atmosphere carried a focused hum of turning plastic as participants prepared their largest hardware for a packed single-day schedule on December 2, 2023. Speed cubing enthusiasts and seasoned organizers greeted familiar faces, setting the stage for an intense showdown where precision across complex puzzles takes absolute priority.

For this gathering, international travel defined the tone of the event. While most of the 17 competitors arrived from across Romania, German standout Achim Spies made the journey across the continent to test his speed against the regional field. That cross-border commitment demonstrated how far puzzle solvers will travel for a specialized cubing competition focused exclusively on the heavier, multi-layered challenges outside standard 3x3 results.

The 2023 lineup featured 4 events spread across 8 rounds, putting stamina to the test without standard Rubik's Cube rounds to fall back on. Mega Big Cubes Bucharest 2023 delivered a tight contest between Spies and Romanian standout Vlad Andrei Bautu, who traded titles throughout the day. Across all podium spots awarded during the competition, Romanian solvers claimed eight positions while Spies captured four for Germany, underscoring the high quality of regional speedcubing.

Achim Spies dominated two events, claiming the 5x5x5 Cube title with an average of 1:28.29, edging out Mihai Căpăţinescu who finished second with 1:32.63, and Vlad Andrei Bautu who took third with 1:33.44. Spies also prevailed in the 12-sided Megaminx event, clocking an average of 1:27.89 alongside the fastest single of the category at 1:15.27. Mateescu Silvia secured second place on Megaminx with 1:30.46, followed by Radu Mihai Stan in third at 1:32.65.

Vlad Andrei Bautu answered by securing both massive cube events on the roster. In the 6x6x6 Cube, Bautu earned victory with a winning average of 2:31.18 and a best single of 2:30.49, finishing ahead of Spies at 2:34.76 and Căpăţinescu at 2:39.84. Bautu completed his double triumph in the 7x7x7 Cube, posting an average of 3:22.70 and the event's top single of 3:13.39, while Căpăţinescu took second in 4:18.05 and Spies secured third in 4:23.55.

Beyond the championship battles, significant personal milestones unfolded across the tables. Matei Corjos delivered one of the weekend's biggest breakthroughs, taking on three events and earning a personal best single of 1:53.75 in the 5x5x5 Cube, which was 48.3 percent faster than his previous mark of 3:40.23, alongside a fifth-place finish in Megaminx.
