Hector David Martinez Argaez Dominates Medellín Explora 2024 With Six TitlesEnglish
Inside the Planetario de Medellín Jesús Emilio Ramírez, the atmosphere was charged with the intensity of a major championship weekend. Over two full days from December 14 to December 15, timers beeped across the staging floor as 84 competitors gathered in Medellín, Antioquia, Colombia. With eleven official events spread across 23 rounds, every heat tested nerve and execution under standard tournament regulations. For the athletes gathered in the hall, the final major cubing competition of 2024 carried high stakes, offering a concluding test of seasonal form across traditional speed events, blind solving, and oversized puzzles alike.
The focal point of any WCA competition remains the classic Rubik's Cube, and the final round of the 3x3x3 Cube delivered a clear masterclass. Hector David Martinez Argaez took control of the 83-competitor field, logging a best single of 7.86 seconds on his way to a title-winning average of 8.79 seconds. Cristian Castellanos Guevara secured second place with an average of 10.05 seconds, while Julian Daza Grisales rounded out the podium with a mark of 10.32 seconds. These decisive 3x3 results capped three rounds of intense bracket trimming on the main stage.
Martinez Argaez was far from finished with his singular triumph in the main event. Across the entire program of Medellin Explora 2024, the Colombian standout put together one of the most prolific multi-event showings of the year, collecting a total of six gold medals. He seized the 2x2x2 Cube title with an average of 2.29 seconds ahead of Juan Manuel Bedoya and Eduar Acevedo. He then expanded his dominance into the larger twisty puzzles, winning the 4x4x4 Cube in 34.17 seconds, the 5x5x5 Cube in 1:04.18, and the 7x7x7 Cube with a 3:13.41 average, while also taking first in Square-1 at 11.32 seconds.
The remaining events produced dramatic finishes of their own, showcasing the breadth of contemporary speedcubing disciplines. In 3x3x3 One-Handed, Juan David Carmona Vásquez captured the title with a swift 12.66 average across three rounds, outpacing Juan Esteban Ochoa and Julian Daza Grisales. Ochoa responded in the Clock event by securing the championship with a winning average of 6.06 seconds and a fast single of 3.77. In the Pyraminx division, Juan Manuel Rueda Jaramillo prevailed through three rounds with an average of 2.88 seconds, while Isabela Quesada Rodríguez claimed the Skewb victory with an average of 3.54 seconds.
Beyond the title fights, the tournament floor served as a launchpad for remarkable progress across personal career records. Lorenzo Bravo Saldarriaga achieved massive drops, slashing his 2x2x2 personal best by 49.4 percent down to 4.34 seconds and dropping his 3x3x3 best to 20.70 seconds, which was 38 percent faster. Jhoan Steve Guarin Varela entered the 3x3x3 Cube and carved out a 27.45 personal best, marking a 47.7 percent improvement over his prior benchmark. Luis Angel Castaño tackled six events, recording a Skewb personal best of 7.45 seconds, 35 percent faster than before, alongside a 1:04.23 in the 4x4x4 Cube that cut 32 percent from his previous record, and a 13.74 single in the standard cube.
New milestones continued as competitors tested unfamiliar disciplines in official tournament play. Emiliano Cuan Martinez earned 7th in 5x5x5 with a debut 1:17.01 mark and improved his One-Handed single by 29.4 percent down to 14.61.
The 3x3x3 Blindfolded competition added pure tension to the schedule, requiring complete memorisation before executing turns without sight. Carlos Miguel Pérez mastered the pressure, delivering a winning average of 1:14.86 alongside the round best single of 58.77 seconds. Gustavo Agudelo Henao was the only other competitor to complete a full average in the event, claiming the silver spot with a time of 4:29.80, as numerous other competitors saw their attempts end without recorded averages.
Across eleven categories, Colombian competitors accounted for all 41 podium places awarded at the venue. With its demanding rounds and broad spread of disciplines, Medellin Explora 2024 served as a fitting end to the regional speed cubing calendar, setting a high competitive standard for the community heading into the next tournament season.
