Ryan Eckersley and Jaye Sloan Lead Precision Battles at Manchester 4BLD Day 2024English

Thirteen competitors stepped forward into total sensory deprivation on August 17, 2024, at the Wythenshawe Forum for Manchester 4BLD Day 2024. Across five high-stakes rounds, speedcubing without sight demanded complete mental mastery, absolute spatial memory, and faultless execution. Every blindfolded discipline forces solvers to map complex puzzle states entirely during the inspection phase before donning a blindfold and executing algorithms purely from memory, leaving zero margin for a misplaced turn.

Held in Manchester, Greater Manchester, United Kingdom, the gathering brought together an elite group dedicated to some of the most arduous formats in the sport. A standard Rubik's Cube is daunting enough when solving blind, but tackling multi-layered puzzles magnifies the mental load exponentially. Across three official events, the WCA competition tested the limits of endurance, calculation, and composure under the strict scrutiny of official timers.

In the marquee 4x4x4 Blindfolded contest, Ryan Eckersley of the United Kingdom delivered a commanding masterclass to capture first place. Eckersley posted a scorching winning single of 1:29.72 across two rounds of play featuring 12 competitors, leaving the field behind. Switzerland's Ezra Hirschi claimed the second step on the podium with a solid 1:52.22, while Jaye Sloan of the United Kingdom secured third place with a 2:25.15 single.

Eckersley was far from finished, doubling his gold medal haul in the gruelling 5x5x5 Blindfolded event. Battling through a solitary, exhausting round against 11 competitors, Eckersley logged an exceptional winning single of 3:03.36 to take top honours. Thomas Patterson of the United Kingdom secured second place with a time of 7:16.12, while Malaysia's Nevins Chan Pak Hoong (陈百鸿) took third place on the podium with a time of 12:45.00.

The 3x3x3 Blindfolded discipline featured 13 competitors over two rounds and produced breathtaking pace at the sharp end of the leaderboard. Jaye Sloan took victory for the United Kingdom with a lightning-fast best single of 17.42, outlasting Ezra Hirschi, who earned second place with a 23.74. Thomas Patterson rounded out the podium in third place with a mark of 27.83, while the broader 3x3 results across the field reflected fierce, calculated attempts under heavy cognitive strain.

Behind the top podium spots at Manchester 4BLD Day 2024, several competitors delivered memorable breakthroughs away from the brightest spotlight. Colm McCarthy of Ireland engineered major drops across the board, setting a 4x4x4 Blindfolded personal best of 3:27.68 to cut his previous mark by 33.3 percent, alongside a 5x5x5 Blindfolded personal best of 16:09.00 that was 26.8 percent faster, and a 3x3x3 Blindfolded personal best of 27.59 which improved by 7.6 percent on his way to fourth in 4x4x4 Blindfolded. CJ Brooke of the United Kingdom also produced a significant leap, taking fourth in 5x5x5 Blindfolded and carving 11.6 percent off his 4x4x4 Blindfolded best with a time of 4:15.26 across three entered events.

Other dedicated solvers embraced the challenge across multiple categories during the cubing competition. Kacper Paweł Dworak of Poland competed in all three events and earned a top result of sixth place in 4x4x4 Blindfolded. Cham J. Chambers took on three disciplines and achieved a seventh-place finish in 3x3x3 Blindfolded, while Harrison Cowie contested three events and secured a weekend-best finish of seventh in 5x5x5 Blindfolded. AJ Nicholls also entered three events, claiming seventh place in 5x5x5 Blindfolded, and Steve Clarke completed two events with a weekend peak of ninth place in 3x3x3 Blindfolded.

The single-day meeting wrapped up with the United Kingdom securing six podium positions, Switzerland claiming two, and Malaysia taking one. Manchester 4BLD Day 2024 served as a pure showcase of mental stamina and speed cubing dexterity, proving that memory and nerve remain just as vital as physical turning speed when the blindfold comes down.
