Specialist Events Take Centre Stage at Manaus Plaza Open 2025English

Nine events and twelve rounds of action brought a dynamic showcase of technical puzzle solving to the Manaus Plaza Shopping on March 15, 2025. With 41 competitors gathering in Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil, the single-day schedule gave enthusiasts of diverse disciplines an arena to test their dexterity. Beyond the standard three-layered puzzle, the gathering spotlighted the distinct talents required for non-traditional mechanisms, from dodecahedral geometric rotation to asymmetric shape-shifting challenges.

The specialised disciplines generated some of the most compelling narratives at the Manaus Plaza Open 2025. In Square-1, a puzzle known for changing form during turns, Gabriel Otavio Barreto da Silva secured victory with a 31.69 average and an event-leading single of 23.38 across four contenders. Miguel Enzo Moraes de Brito claimed the runner-up spot at 50.62, while Chris Chang rounded out the podium at 56.08. In the twelve-sided Megaminx event, Pedro Lucas Nascimento proved dominant, producing an average of 1:40.14 and a single of 1:35.36 to finish clear atop the five-person field.

The mechanical variety continued with the Skewb and Pyraminx events, drawing intense single-round shootouts among regional talents. Luis Guilherme V. Miranda claimed the Skewb gold with a 10.11 average and a 7.48 single, narrowly edging out Gabriel Otavio Barreto da Silva whose 10.32 average earned second place ahead of Miguel Enzo Moraes de Brito at 11.66. Meanwhile, Miguel Enzo Moraes de Brito captured the top step in Pyraminx, logging an 8.56 winning average and a 5.14 single to lead Luis Guilherme V. Miranda and Francisco Miguel Melo Reboucas on the podium.

Across the blindfolded discipline, solving demands total spatial memorisation before turning a single face in complete darkness. The 3x3x3 Blindfolded contest presented severe challenges across its single round for the three brave entrants. Thales Araujo de Souza, Murilo Rodrigues Miranda, and Miguel Enzo Moraes de Brito each recorded a DNF result, underscoring the razor-thin margin of error inherent in unguided execution.

Beyond the specialist contests, traditional speedcubing categories delivered tight battles across multi-round brackets. Renan Goncalves Melo delivered a superb performance in 3x3x3 One-Handed, securing victory across two rounds with an 18.16 average and a 15.42 single, besting Eduardo Gabriel Silva Bezerra and Thales Araujo de Souza. Renan Goncalves Melo added another title in the 2x2x2 Cube with a winning average of 4.47, holding off Eduardo Gabriel Silva Bezerra at 4.68 and Miguel Enzo Moraes de Brito at 4.95.

The marquee 3x3 results featured an entry list of 32 contenders navigating two rigorous rounds of classic Rubik's Cube competition. Lucas Guerreiro Matos Lopes claimed the title with a tournament-best 12.06 average alongside a 10.29 single, finishing ahead of Renan Goncalves Melo with 13.17 and Eduardo Gabriel Silva Bezerra with 13.75. Lucas Guerreiro Matos Lopes followed up that success by capturing the 4x4x4 Cube event, posting a 45.86 average to lead Miguel Enzo Moraes de Brito and Gabriel Otavio Barreto da Silva on the podium.

Away from the top steps of the podium, several competitors made substantial strides in personal milestones and tournament debuts. Pedro Henrique Amorim Nazare took on 5 events, earning 4th place in Skewb while shaving 13.7 percent off his 3x3x3 Cube personal best with an 11.48 single compared to his prior 13.30 mark. Matheus Peres Albuquerque took on 3 events and earned 4th place in the 3x3x3 Cube. Gustavo Samuel de Oliveira Mendonca tackled 5 events in his first WCA competition, recording his first ever attempt in Megaminx of 6:29.86, his first 3x3x3 Cube attempt of 25.81, his first 2x2x2 Cube attempt of 10.12, and achieving a 5th-place finish in Megaminx. Murilo Aires Correa also made his debut across 4 events, placing 5th in Pyraminx with an opening mark of 10.97, alongside maiden attempts of 17.67 in 3x3x3 Cube and 4.41 in 2x2x2 Cube.

Debut outings continued across the roster as new talent engaged with tournament speed cubing for the first time. Pedro Henrique Rodrigues Maciel entered 4 events at his first competition, placing 4th in Pyraminx with an initial 12.84 mark, alongside opening times of 26.60 in 3x3x3 Cube and 2:41.01 in 4x4x4 Cube. Luiz Henrique Marciel Victor took on 2 events, logging a 14th-place finish in Pyraminx with a 22.06 attempt and registering a 12.70 mark in the 2x2x2 Cube. The successful execution of the Manaus Plaza Open 2025 brought 27 podium finishes for the host nation across an eventful single day of competitive solving.
