Specialist Events Take Centre Stage at Machalí Open 2023English

Six events and twelve fast-paced rounds filled the timetable as 87 competitors gathered for a packed day of speedcubing action. While the classic puzzles drew deep fields, the niche side events delivered some of the sharpest turnarounds of the entire tournament. Specialists in non-standard disciplines made their mark early at Colegio Gabriela Mistral, showing that mastering alternative mechanisms requires just as much tactical calculation and finger precision as any traditional cube event on the circuit.

The Pyraminx contest showcased exceptional speed, drawing 53 entrants across two competitive rounds. Michael Fonseca dominated the final stage, taking victory with an impressive 2.88 winning average and securing a best single of 1.54. José Antonio Gaete followed in second place with an average of 3.46, while Gustavo Alonso Sandoval Loncón claimed the third step on the podium at 3.82. The triangular puzzle demands rapid edge orientation and tip manipulation, rewarding competitors who can spot full-solution pathways before initiating their first turn.

The corner-turning Skewb event brought further technical drama across its two rounds of play. Rami Sbahi led the 24-person field, posting a winning average of 3.71 along with a sharp single of 2.54 to capture the title. Michael Fonseca continued a strong showing across multiple categories by taking second place with a 4.88 average. Renata Francisca De La Fuente Ábalos secured third with a 4.99 mark, demonstrating the tight margins that define high-level Skewb competition where slight misalignments can disrupt an entire solve.

One-handed solving added another dimension of difficulty at Machalí Open 2023, testing single-hand fingertricks and table-sliding techniques across 32 competitors. Rami Sbahi earned his second specialty victory of the day, logging a 12.39 winning average and an 11.35 best single. Claudio Matias Cancino Bruna finished closely behind in second position with a 13.40 average, just ahead of Jose Basaes, who placed third with a mark of 13.47 in the one-round battle.

Away from the top steps of the podium, several participants marked remarkable milestones across varied disciplines. Domingo Cabrera Luco took on four events, earning a 10th-place finish in Skewb, making a first ever attempt at Pyraminx with an 8.70, and dropping personal records by massive margins: a 4.64 Skewb single that was 71 percent faster than a previous 15.98, alongside a 13.87 3x3x3 Cube solve, 22.6 percent faster than before. Santiago Alonso Vega Rubio also tackled four events, registering a first ever attempt at Pyraminx of 14.48, a first ever attempt at Skewb of 31.39, and a 2x2x2 Cube personal best of 10.80, which was 42.6 percent faster than his prior 18.80. Ihan Soto entered all six categories, securing 27th place in 3x3x3 One-Handed with a first ever attempt of 52.91, recording a first ever attempt at 4x4x4 Cube of 2:01.55, and dropping a Skewb personal best by 36.3 percent to 6.46. Gonzalo Ignacio Mellado Cortez recorded a first ever attempt at Pyraminx of 8.00 and a first ever attempt at 2x2x2 Cube of 5.58, while lowering his 3x3x3 Cube personal best by 23.3 percent to 15.41. Julián Muñoz tackled three events, posting a first ever attempt at Pyraminx of 10.32, a 2x2x2 Cube personal best of 7.18 that was 41.6 percent faster than his former 12.29, and a 23.12 in the 3x3x3 Cube. Martín Alberto Carrasco Troncoso generated two personal bests, cutting his 2x2x2 Cube mark by 65.4 percent down to 10.18 and improving his 3x3x3 Cube best by 16.3 percent to 52.02.
