Philipp Weyer Dominates the Tables at Loutraki Open 2023English

The sports hall at Sportcamp Greece was filled with the rhythmic clatter of plastic layers snapping into place across two intense days of solving. Ninety-one competitors gathered in Loutraki, Greece on September 16 and 17 for a bustling speedcubing program featuring seven official disciplines and eleven total rounds. Across every station, judges reset timers and held up scorecards as solvers tested their reaction speeds and algorithm recall under tournament pressure.

At the center of the weekend action was Germany standout Philipp Weyer, who exerted complete control over the marquee events. In the classic Rubik's Cube competition, Weyer delivered a clinical performance across three rounds to take first place with an exceptional 6.58 winning average, highlighted by a sharp 6.30 best single. Greece competitor Giannis Grigoropoulos secured second place with an average of 9.17, while Vasilis Prigkos took third with a 9.32 mark.

Weyer carried that exact same dominance into the 4x4x4 Cube, sweeping the single round with an average of 30.78 and a tournament best single of 26.21. No other solver came within seven seconds of his pace, as Zois Lefkidis finished as runner-up on 38.27 and Vasilis Prigkos picked up another podium place in third with a 40.66 average. The twin victories gave Weyer an uncontested sweep of the main speed cubing events.

Beyond the top steps, the weekend featured remarkable personal breakthroughs from solvers making huge technical leaps. Platonas Zeimpekis achieved a massive 46.8 percent drop in the 3x3x3 Cube, posting a personal best of 10.91 to finish 15th, while cutting his 4x4x4 mark by 34.7 percent to 1:06.12. Alexandros Koudounas had a standout run across five events, dropping his 2x2x2 best by 42.2 percent down to 3.40, his 3x3x3 time by 40.2 percent to 15.95, and his Pyraminx mark by 30.8 percent to 9.53.

The progress continued with Ilyas Jaouadi, who logged a 41.8 percent improvement for a 10.09 3x3x3 personal best, took 18th overall, improved by 22.7 percent in 2x2x2 to 2.48, and registered his first ever attempt at 4x4x4 with a 1:15.57. Angelos Merkouroglou entered four disciplines, shaving 40 percent off his 3x3x3 time to hit 20.22, improving his 2x2x2 by 37.6 percent to 3.89, and completing his first 4x4x4 attempt in 1:47.69. Rayyen Jaouadi logged a first Pyraminx attempt of 14.73 and cut his 2x2x2 best by 37.7 percent to 6.87. Evangelos Stefanakis tackled six events, achieving a 35.1 percent Pyraminx cut to 10.37 alongside debut attempts of 24.15 in Clock and 1:42.63 in 4x4x4. Errikos Markatatos took 5th in Clock, made his first Megaminx attempt at 2:19.03, and set personal bests of 3.29 in 2x2x2 and 54.32 in 4x4x4, while Adrianos Markatatos made his first Clock run in 15.20, cut his Pyraminx time by 23.4 percent to 9.01, and reached a 6.67 personal best in 2x2x2.

Fast action also defined the shorter puzzles throughout this WCA competition. In the 2x2x2 Cube, Vasilis Prigkos took the title with a rapid 2.54 average, edging Nikolaos Zoulfikiaroglou at 3.15 and Dimitris Lefas at 3.40. Over on the Pyraminx table, Ioannis Ntalis secured victory with a 4.10 winning average, followed on the podium by Panagiotis Christopoulos on 5.07 and Nikolaos Zikos on 5.99.

The specialized puzzles delivered tense conclusions at Loutraki Open 2023. Nikolaos Zikos captured the Megaminx title by averaging 56.38, besting Ioannis Papadopoulos who clocked 1:02.61 and Michael Eleftheriades from Cyprus at 1:11.85. The Clock event produced a photo-finish duel, as Ignatios Papathemistokleous of Cyprus won with a 7.60 average, narrowly edging Konstantinos Theodoropoulos at 7.65 and Pierre Bouvier of France at 8.64.

The 3x3x3 Blindfolded round tested memory and execution to the limit, with Thodoris Iatrou emerging as the sole competitor to record a successful solve, taking first place with a single of 1:31.46 as all eight other entrants received DNFs. By the time the final scores were tallied at Loutraki Open 2023, the event showed the strength of the host nation alongside top-tier international talent.

With 21 podium spots won by Greek competitors, two by Germany, two by Cyprus, and two by France, the tournament concluded as a showcase of deep regional quality. The final 3x3 results and multisport achievements across all seven disciplines made Loutraki Open 2023 a standout stop on the 2023 cubing competition calendar.
