Larissa Spring Open 2023 Delivers Intense Multi-Round Battles Across Eight DisciplinesEnglish

The tournament floor inside the Larissa Imperial Hotel buzzed with focused energy as timers reset and inspection covers lifted across a packed weekend of puzzles. With 116 competitors gathering in Larissa, Greece, tables stayed constantly busy from the first solves on May 6 through the final round on May 7. The tournament format created high-stakes pressure from the start, as 17 rounds across eight events forced competitors to navigate tight cutoffs and thinning fields to earn spots on the final stage.

The main event demonstrated how multi-round endurance defines a cubing competition, putting 105 participants through a grueling four-round gauntlet. As the field narrowed to the final group of solvers, consistency under pressure separated the leaders on the classic Rubik's Cube. Giannis Grigoropoulos captured top honours in 3x3x3 Cube by securing a winning average of 9.27 seconds, complemented by a tournament best single solve of 7.16 seconds. Vasilis Prigkos took second place with a 9.87 average, while Argiris Zotos claimed third on a 9.95 mark.

Across the broader weekend schedule, double-round formats in the larger cubes gave specialists room to adjust between sessions. Zois Lefkidis established command over the big cubes, winning the 4x4x4 Cube final with a 39.69 average alongside a 35.77 best single, before returning in 5x5x5 Cube to post a winning mark of 1:14.27 and a 1:09.50 single. Prigkos pressed closely behind to finish as the runner-up in both finals with averages of 39.88 and 1:15.60, while Cyprus competitor Michael Eleftheriades claimed third place in both events with times of 45.07 and 1:25.08.

Short-format events challenged competitors to execute rapid solutions across two quick stages. Nikolas Baxevanis produced an exceptional double victory across the side disciplines at Larissa Spring Open 2023, clinching the Skewb title with an average of 5.39 and a single of 2.94, before taking Pyraminx with a 5.41 average and 4.06 single. Panagiotis Christopoulos placed second in both finals, delivering a 5.62 average on Skewb and a 6.00 average on Pyraminx. In 2x2x2 Cube, Vasilis Prigkos took first place with a rapid 2.91 average, holding off Iasonas Mylonas at 3.74 and Dimitris Tiktapanidis at 3.82.

Away from the top of the standings, several solvers delivered substantial breakthroughs and took on demanding multi-event programmes. Stefanos Roussos entered five disciplines and achieved a 60.6 percent improvement on Pyraminx with an 8.92 personal best, alongside first career attempts of 1:18.44 in 4x4x4 Cube and 8.44 in Skewb. Aggelos Gkinos tackled seven events, slicing his 4x4x4 Cube mark by 45.5 percent to 1:17.34, dropping his 3x3x3 Cube best by 35.4 percent to 22.45, and logging a first Skewb attempt of 25.77. John Chatzivrettas entered six disciplines, cutting 35.7 percent off his 2x2x2 Cube time down to 5.41 while recording debut times of 13.16 on Skewb and 2:29.26 on 4x4x4 Cube. Anastasios Mantzaris entered five events, cutting his 3x3x3 mark by 16 percent to 13.10 and posting maiden attempts of 7.33 in Skewb and 1:27.68 in 4x4x4 Cube.

The depth of participation continued across extensive individual campaigns throughout the weekend schedule. Georgios Evangelaras handled seven disciplines, achieving a best finish of 34th in 2x2x2 Cube and recording first career times of 1:30.14 on 4x4x4 Cube, 15.37 on Skewb, and 3:22.50 on 5x5x5 Cube. Charidimos Gourniezakis secured 6th place in 2x2x2 Cube across five events while making first attempts of 1:01.67 in 4x4x4 Cube, 2:33.10 in 5x5x5 Cube, and 8.51 in Skewb. Iraklis Tsanaktsis competed in six categories, recording debut marks of 2:10.73 in 4x4x4 Cube, 15.55 in Skewb, and 2:37.68 in Megaminx. Dimitrios Karaiskos took on five events, logging first attempts of 12.07 in Pyraminx, 16.06 in Skewb, and 2:28.25 in 4x4x4 Cube.

Single-round precision played a pivotal role in the non-standard formats where mental endurance proved decisive. The 3x3x3 Blindfolded discipline demanded total recall from inspection to finish, with Thodoris Iatrou winning the event on an average of 1:08.48 and a sub-minute single of 59.17 seconds. Konstantinos Zaglanis followed in second with 2:31.99, while Christos Lazarakis placed third at 3:23.35. In Megaminx, Ioannis Papadopoulos earned the title over two rounds with a 1:06.66 average and a 1:04.36 single, finishing ahead of Michael Eleftheriades at 1:19.10 and Iatrou at 1:22.23.

When the final stopwatches halted at Larissa Spring Open 2023, the event underlined the rising standard across Greek speed cubing. Host nation competitors earned 20 podium positions alongside 4 podium finishes for Cyprus, showcasing talent across both classic and specialist categories. The high volume of personal bests, rapid qualification cut battles, and sharp 3x3 results confirmed the competition as a landmark stop on the 2023 WCA competition calendar, setting a high competitive benchmark as solvers prepare for the next wave of tournaments across the region.
