Chris Chi Sweeps Three Events at Lake Erie Showdown 2023English

Precision under pressure defined the action in western Pennsylvania as Chris Chi captured three separate titles in a commanding showing. Held at Grace Church Harborcreek on October 7, 2023, the Lake Erie Showdown 2023 tested 66 competitors across 6 events and 11 rounds of intense speedcubing. In high-stakes rounds, the absence of dropped solves means a single mistake can dismantle an entire round, leaving no room for a counting disaster.

The 3x3x3 Cube contest stood at the center of the cubing competition schedule, attracting all 66 entrants across three stages. Chi paced the field with a final winning average of 8.01 seconds, backed by a best single of 6.58 seconds. Sean Cutshaw secured second place with an average of 8.50 seconds, while AJ Kamal took third in 8.60 seconds. The classic Rubik's Cube battle delivered razor-thin margins at the top of the 3x3 results.

Chi extended his dominance to the smaller formats, taking top honors in both the 2x2x2 Cube and Skewb. In the 2x2x2 final, Chi recorded a winning average of 1.52 seconds along with an explosive 0.85 best single, finishing ahead of Jacob Nobili at 2.34 seconds and Darshan Bhavanasi at 2.90 seconds. Chi followed that up in Skewb with a 3.67 winning average, edging out Cutshaw at 4.05 seconds and Kamal at 4.32 seconds.

The big cube categories required immense stamina and unwavering consistency. In the 4x4x4 Cube, Kamal claimed the title with an average of 34.95 seconds and a best single of 34.31 seconds, holding off Chi at 35.81 seconds and Cutshaw at 37.66 seconds. The 5x5x5 Cube crown went to Cutshaw, who delivered a winning average of 1:04.51 and the only sub-minute single of the day at 1:00.28, besting Chi's 1:09.62 and Stephen Griggs' 1:11.09.

Darshan Bhavanasi broke Chi's sweep of the short-format events by capturing the Pyraminx title. Bhavanasi posted a winning average of 3.30 seconds and a best single of 1.34 seconds across two rounds. Caleb Gabel pushed close behind with an average of 3.39 seconds for second place, while Mark Gowman rounded out the podium with a 3.53 average. The podium finishes across all events saw 16 placements for the USA and 2 for India.

Beyond the podium battles, Lake Erie Showdown 2023 showcased remarkable individual milestones and major breakthrough marks. Andrew Stirling sliced 57.5 percent off his previous personal best in the 2x2x2 Cube by finishing in 1.82 seconds and completed his first ever attempt at 5x5x5 Cube in 1:26.99. Richard Gardner delivered a 57.1 percent improvement on his 2x2x2 personal best with a 2.06 single and took on his first ever attempt at Skewb in 6.03 seconds.
