Muñoz Torres Dominates the Big Puzzles at La Estrella Big Cubes 2023English

Inside the halls of Unidad Deportiva La Tablaza, the intense rhythm of turning plastic echoed through the venue as twenty-six competitors gathered for a day of rigorous solving. Large layers required steady forearms, sustained concentration, and methodical piece pairing across every round. The gathering brought together dedicated solvers in La Estrella, Colombia, testing their stamina against complex multi-layered mechanisms. From the first warmups to the late rounds, the atmosphere remained focused on the discipline of heavy-duty speedcubing.

The schedule at La Estrella Big Cubes 2023 featured five demanding events spread across ten intense rounds of competition on November 19, 2023. Unlike standard sprint setups, this cubing competition prioritized the endurance and lookahead necessary for big puzzles. Solvers managed lengthy solves where a single misaligned layer or catching piece could derail minutes of careful progression. The Colombian contingent proved ready for the test, ultimately claiming all fifteen available podium places throughout the single-day tournament.

The marathon 7x7x7 Cube tested solvers over extended minutes of continuous turning and pairing. Jhonier Andres Díaz Brito seized the title with a commanding 2:55.08 winning average, also posting the single fastest time of the event at 2:42.06. Ale Restrepo secured the second position with an average of 3:33.56, while Julian Zapata took third place on the podium with a 3:54.79 result. Managing the sheer mass of the fourteen-layer puzzle demanded complete physical and mental stamina from all nine entrants.

In the 6x6x6 Cube division, Erick Steven Muñoz Torres began a remarkable multi-event sweep by taking the title with a winning average of 2:14.28 and a best single of 2:06.69. The battle for the remaining podium steps remained exceptionally close throughout the final round. Jhonier Andres Díaz Brito earned the runner-up spot with an average of 2:17.74, edging past Ale Restrepo, who completed the podium in third place with a narrow 2:18.80 average across their solves.

The 5x5x5 Cube delivered another showcase of control and speed as Erick Steven Muñoz Torres earned his second major victory of the day. Muñoz Torres secured first place with an average of 1:05.27 alongside a best single solve of 1:01.45. Jhonier Andres Díaz Brito mounted a strong challenge to finish in second place with a close 1:05.98 average, while Juan Esteban Ochoa claimed third place on the podium with a time of 1:13.71 among the fourteen competitors.

Beyond the podium battles, several participants marked meaningful personal milestones on the tournament floor. Alejandro Cano Vidal tackled three separate events, highlighted by a ninth-place finish in Megaminx where he logged a new personal best of 1:53.48, trimming 11.3 percent off his prior mark of 2:07.95. Oscar Andres Machado entered the classic 3x3x3 Cube and recorded a personal best single of 20.16 seconds, improving by 5.1 percent over his previous 21.25 standard. Mauro Yesid Dávila Dávila also delivered in the 3x3x3 Cube, setting a personal best single of 26.05 seconds.

Other solvers produced strong placements across the bracket during this WCA competition. Sebastian Cano Vidal took on two events and reached sixteenth place in the 3x3x3 Cube. Mauricio de Jesus Hernandez Grizalez delivered a steady run to secure tenth place in the 3x3x3 Cube. Sofía Lopera Mejia earned fifteenth place in the same event, while Mariana Henao Ortiz captured fourteenth place. Samuel Sierra Badel rounded out the deep field by finishing in thirteenth place in the 3x3x3 Cube.

The twelve-sided Megaminx event offered a different kind of geometric endurance for the field. Julian Daza Grisales navigated the complex colour patterns to win the event with a 51.03 average and a top single of 48.58 seconds. Ale Restrepo achieved second place with an average of 53.07 seconds, while Erick Steven Muñoz Torres added another top-three finish to his collection by taking third place with an average of 1:02.38. The technical turning demonstrated sharp pattern recognition across all twelve faces.

The classic Rubik's Cube brought the competition to a high-speed conclusion with two full rounds of action. In the 3x3 results, Erick Steven Muñoz Torres captured his third gold of the day with an average of 9.86 seconds and a best single of 9.16. Julian Daza Grisales followed closely behind with an average of 10.11 seconds for second place, just ahead of Ale Restrepo who recorded 10.16 seconds for third. The fast-paced speed cubing in the final event provided an exciting contrast to the earlier endurance tests.

The action at La Estrella Big Cubes 2023 wrapped up having tested the full spectrum of Colombian puzzle-solving talent. From the grueling layers of the 7x7x7 to the split-second turns of the 3x3x3, competitors pushed their limits across every round. With multiple victories for Muñoz Torres and strong all-around performances from Díaz Brito, Daza Grisales, and Restrepo, the day demonstrated the dedication required to excel across the largest cubes in the sport.
