Lev Golub Dominates Kyiv Side Events l 2024 as Clock Decided by Six HundredthsEnglish

A mere six hundredths of a second decided the most dramatic contest of the weekend at Kyiv Side Events l 2024. In a heart-stopping Clock final, Lev Golub claimed the title with a five-solve average of 5.54 seconds, narrowly edging out Serhii Hoiuk, who posted a blistering 5.60 average. Oleksandr Kulyna completed the podium in third place with a mark of 6.06 seconds. The razor-thin margin set the tone for an intense day of side-event solving, where fractions of a second meant the difference between standing atop the podium and taking home silver.

Held on April 7, 2024, in Kyiv, Ukraine, the single-day WCA competition took place at Rivvorking, gathering 35 competitors across 14 fast-paced rounds. While fans looking for standard 3x3 results found none on the schedule, the focused lineup gave alternative puzzles their moment in the spotlight. The event proved to be a masterclass for Lev Golub, who swept four separate events and earned a spot on five of the six podiums available throughout the tournament.

Lev Golub carried his momentum directly into the 2x2x2 Cube final, finishing as the only solver to break the two-second barrier with a winning average of 1.99 seconds. Vladyslav Hryniuk secured second place with an average of 3.09 seconds, while Oleksandr Ivanov captured third with 3.60. The 2x2x2 Cube competition featured 32 competitors battling through three rounds, serving as the largest bracket of Kyiv Side Events l 2024 and delivering some of the fastest turn speeds of the entire weekend.

The versatile Lev Golub added two more victories in Skewb and Square-1. In Skewb, Golub averaged 3.10 seconds across five solves, leading Danylo Dobrogorskyi at 4.81 and Vladyslav Hryniuk at 5.01. Later in Square-1, Golub recorded a winning 9.66 average, finishing well clear of Yurii Riabov with 12.33 and Vladyslav Hryniuk with 13.43. Golub proved nearly unbeatable across distinct mechanics, whether handling shape-shifting puzzles or flat mechanical dials, establishing himself as the day's dominant force.

Beyond the title sweep, Kyiv Side Events l 2024 provided standout performances across Pyraminx and Megaminx. Danylo Dobrogorskyi claimed the Pyraminx crown with an average of 3.28 seconds, besting Vladyslav Hryniuk at 4.14 and Lev Golub at 4.43 in a competitive three-round event. In Megaminx, Vladyslav Hryniuk earned his own gold medal with an impressive 39.03 average, beating runner-up Oleh Korchan at 40.46 and third-place Lev Golub at 44.40 over the complex dodecahedron puzzle.

Away from the championship hardware, the true depth of the tournament emerged through personal triumphs and massive breakthroughs. Tymofii Kuzio engineered the largest improvement of the day, dropping his Pyraminx single from 21.19 down to 5.13 seconds, a remarkable 75.8 percent reduction, alongside a 59.3 percent improvement in 2x2x2 Cube to 6.49. Denys Hrushnyk also made massive strides, cutting his 2x2x2 Cube best by 57.8 percent to 3.75 seconds, while also making his first career Pyraminx attempt with an 11.95 single and placing 13th overall. Maksym Solodkyi tackled six events, achieving an 8th-place Square-1 finish with a 23.97 best that was 55.4 percent faster than his prior mark, while logging his first Megaminx solve at 2:07.60.

Other competitors embraced new challenges with enthusiasm across the schedule. Kyrylo Zelinskyi contested five disciplines and took 5th place in 2x2x2 Cube, lowering his personal best by 34.8 percent to 2.64 seconds. Yurii Davydiuk took on four events, logging his first official attempts in Skewb with 9.82 seconds, Square-1 with 1:09.75, and 2x2x2 Cube with 6.04. Ivan Yakovenko entered five events, setting his first marks in Clock with 27.04 and Square-1 with 1:02.92, while improving his 2x2x2 Cube single by 21.5 percent to 5.78. Matvii Zelenko placed 13th in Pyraminx with a debut 8.32 single, also trying Skewb for the first time at 12.93, while Andrii Churpii registered his first official solves in 2x2x2 Cube at 8.42 and Pyraminx at 7.54.

The spirit of speedcubing extends far beyond the traditional Rubik's Cube, and this dedicated cubing competition proved how much variety exists in competitive speed cubing. With all 18 podium positions claimed by Ukrainian solvers across six events, the meeting highlighted strong domestic talent and widespread personal progress. As Kyiv Side Events l 2024 concluded, participants left with fresh milestones and sharp times to carry forward into the rest of the 2024 season.
