Specialists Converge in Kyiv for a Weekend of Mental TestsEnglish

Inside the Rivvorking space in Kyiv, Ukraine, the desks were arranged with austere precision, stripped of the usual rush of standard speed cubing rounds. Competitors had journeyed across regions to take their seats for the weekend of February 17 to February 18, carrying bags packed with blindfolds, pens, and paper rather than stacks of rotational hardware. The silent concentration in the hall set a distinct tone, reflecting a gathering designed purely for the memory disciplines and calculation rounds that push personal endurance to its limits.

The gathering was staged as Kyiv Mental Breakdown I 2024, an intensive WCA competition drawing a targeted field of 16 competitors across five specialized events. For many of the participants, making the trip meant committing to two days of pure cognitive challenge, tackling complex blindfolded algorithms and deliberate move efficiency rather than sheer turning velocity. Over six rounds of competition in 2024, every podium spot remained squarely within the home nation, yielding 20 total top-three finishes across the schedule.

In the 3x3x3 Blindfolded discipline, Volodymyr Solonka demonstrated elite form across the two rounds. Solving the classic Rubik's Cube without sight requires flawless spatial mapping and total recall under the timer. Solonka delivered the premier mark of the tournament with a single of 22.26 seconds to take first place, followed on the podium by Bohdan Pylypchak with a best time of 35.30 seconds and Anna Postonohova, who claimed third place with a 51.58-second single in the final.

Volodymyr Solonka extended his dominance directly into 3x3x3 Multi-Blind, where contestants must inspect and remember an entire array of cubes before donning the blindfold to solve them sequentially. Solonka achieved a flawless 12 out of 12 cubes in 53 minutes and 58 seconds to claim his second victory of the meet. Serhii Mormul took second place by successfully completing 10 of 11 puzzles in 52:37, while Yurii Riabov earned third place with a perfect 7 of 7 cubes solved in 41:45.

The 3x3x3 Fewest Moves contest drew 15 solvers, demanding deep theoretical understanding and methodical trial within a strict one-hour writing window. Yurii Riabov navigated the three attempts with remarkable consistency, taking the title with a winning average of 25.00 moves and a single best of 24. Modest Podzolkin secured second place with an average of 27.33 moves, and Serhii Mormul rounded out the podium in third with a 33.67 average, anchoring the weekend 3x3 results in precision strategy.

Beyond the podium battles, the depth of the weekend emerged through dedicated personal milestones that make any cubing competition memorable. Kyrylo Zelinskyi stepped into a fresh discipline by logging his first ever attempt at 3x3x3 Fewest Moves, delivering a 44-move count and earning a 13th-place finish. Ivan Kovach tackled three separate events across the schedule, securing a best finish of 5th place in 3x3x3 Blindfolded. Yelysei Hovorun took on two blindfolded categories, earning an 8th-place result in the 3x3x3 Blindfolded discipline.

The large-cube blindfolded events brought demanding execution and high stakes to the tables at Kyiv Mental Breakdown I 2024. In the 4x4x4 Blindfolded contest, Serhii Mormul produced a composed, complete solve of 6:27.95 to take first place, standing out in a difficult field where Lev Golub finished second with a time of 9:51.53. The remaining competitors in the round recorded non-finishes, showing just how exacting the memorisation and parity management can be on higher-order puzzles.

The test reached its absolute peak in 5x5x5 Blindfolded, where five brave competitors attempted to solve the massive puzzle entirely from memory. Lev Golub achieved the sole successful time of the event, navigating the vast network of centers, wings, and corners to record a winning single of 26:40.00. The remaining four competitors registered incomplete attempts, leaving Golub atop the podium alone as the only finisher in the discipline.

As Kyiv Mental Breakdown I 2024 came to a close, the weekend stood as a testament to the dedication required in niche speedcubing disciplines. The competitors who travelled to Rivvorking proved their mettle through intricate calculations and memory marathons, closing out two intense days of mental competition and leaving a strong blueprint for the next season of Ukrainian blindfolded and fewest moves contests.
