Schelin and Devere Sweep the Field Across Eleven Events at Kungkuben 2025English
Twenty-three competitors gathered in Kungälv, Sweden on March 15, 2025, taking their places at Kvarnkullen for a packed schedule of speed cubing. Across thirteen fast-paced rounds and eleven events, the day offered an intense demonstration of tactile agility and mental calculation. From rapid turning in the smaller puzzles to the quiet, methodical planning demanded by the blindfolded discipline, the single-day WCA competition showcased the sheer variety of modern speedcubing under one roof.
While pen-and-paper strategy formats like Fewest Moves highlight the deliberate, analytical contrast to frantic turning speeds, the action on the tables in Kungälv tested pure dexterity and immediate problem-solving under the clock. Every competitor faced the challenge of translating visual pattern recognition into precise physical execution without a second to spare. The intense schedule demanded instant adjustments across wildly different mechanical puzzles, testing both veteran resolve and emerging talent in equal measure.
Leading the way across multiple disciplines, Emanuel Schelin captured the premier title of the day in the 3x3x3 Cube. Schelin logged a winning average of 6.54 seconds across two rounds, anchored by a best single solve of 5.77 seconds to seal the victory. Pep Edén followed in second place with an average of 8.15 seconds, while Bosse Schelander earned third place with a mark of 9.55 seconds. The 3x3 results capped a dominant showing for Swedish solvers on home soil.
Schelin extended his winning form across the schedule, securing a total of four individual titles during the competition. In the 2x2x2 Cube final, Schelin topped the podium with a 1.62 average, outpacing Ruben Norén Gustafsson at 2.62 and Eskil Munthe at 2.64. He also claimed the 4x4x4 Cube with a winning average of 33.03 seconds and took top honours in Square-1, finishing the single round with an average of 12.19 seconds.
The big cubes belonged to United Kingdom competitor Adam Devere, who claimed three first-place finishes at Kungkuben 2025. Devere prevailed in the 6x6x6 Cube with an average of 2:28.45 ahead of Norén Gustafsson and Munthe, and followed up by winning the 7x7x7 Cube with an average of 3:58.47. Devere also showed his versatility with puzzle hardware by winning the Clock event with a 6.44 average, narrowly besting Munthe who finished at 6.50.
Beyond the top podium steps, several competitors delivered remarkable personal milestones that the final standings only begin to tell. Hugo Dahlgren entered three events, taking on his first ever official attempts in both the 2x2x2 Cube with an 18.42 and Clock with a 21.30, while improving his 3x3x3 Rubik's Cube best by 30.6 percent to 1:08.21. Lucas Risling took on two events and cut his 3x3x3 personal best by 21.2 percent down to 52.92 seconds. Richard Ohlén competed across nine disciplines, securing fourth place in 3x3x3 Blindfolded with a personal best of 3:48.11, which was 21.3 percent faster than his prior mark, alongside personal bests of 8.19 in Skewb and 38.96 in Square-1.
The depth of progress continued across the field as competitors tackled extensive event schedules. Jonas Bjerklund took on seven events, recording his first official attempts in Clock at 15.32 and Pyraminx at 13.46, finishing fifth in 3x3x3 Blindfolded and dropping his 5x5x5 Cube best by 9.9 percent to 3:29.48. Theo Devere tackled nine events, posting personal bests of 6.97 in Skewb, 2:49.98 in 5x5x5, and 11.74 in Clock. Birgitta Zacharoff took part in five events, improving her Clock personal best by 14.2 percent to 33.21 and lowering her Skewb best to 20.22 alongside a 21.77 in 2x2x2.
Specialist categories rounded out an eventful day of solving in Kungälv. Eskil Munthe secured first place in the 3x3x3 Blindfolded event with a winning single solve of 28.40 seconds, leading Devere and Schelin on the podium. Pep Edén won the 5x5x5 Cube in 1:12.10, edging Schelin at 1:12.31 and Tor Torstensson at 1:12.76. In the shorter formats, Bosse Schelander captured the Pyraminx title with a 5.38 average, while Alvar Solving claimed victory in Skewb with a 4.04 average.
Across eleven distinct events, the cubing competition demonstrated the vibrant standard of play across Sweden and international visitors alike. With twenty-nine podium places earned by Swedish representatives and four by the United Kingdom, the gathering at Kvarnkullen highlighted the technical mastery, variety, and competitive spirit driving the speedcubing community forward into the 2025 season.
