Lim Hung Dominates Diverse Slate at Krungthep Farewell 2023English

Lim Hung closed out the year with an emphatic statement in Bangkok, Thailand, sweeping three distinct titles in a single day of high-level competition. His commanding 1:20.95 average in the 6x6x6 Cube stood out as the defining performance of a varied program, highlighting a showcase that challenged solvers across an unusual mix of disciplines. Rather than centering on standard speed events, the final day of 2023 offered a specialized examination of endurance, precision, and spatial mastery across six non-traditional categories.

Held on December 31, 2023, at the SocialPack Co-Working Space, Krungthep Farewell 2023 brought together 29 competitors for a tight 13-round schedule. The assembly of events demanded quick adaptation, shifting between the geometric peculiarities of the dodecahedral Megaminx, the dial-turning mechanics of Clock, the shape-shifting Square-1, and massive big cubes. Fans following broader speedcubing results found plenty to admire in the technical range required to navigate such an eclectic slate.

Lim proved virtually unstoppable across the big cube categories. In the 6x6x6 Cube, the Malaysian standout posted a winning average of 1:20.95 and a single of 1:18.39 across two rounds, finishing ahead of Thailand's Asia Konvittayayotin at 1:35.10 and Natthaphat Mahtani at 1:43.75. Lim doubled down in the 7x7x7 Cube final, taking the top spot with a sub-two-minute average of 1:59.37 and a best effort of 1:54.07, once again placing Asia Konvittayayotin in second at 2:24.90 and Chawin Ratanasiri in third at 2:34.34.

Beyond the heavy layers of the big cubes, Lim captured a third gold in the Square-1 event, topping three rounds of play with a decisive 10.98 final average and a best single of 9.30. Chawin Ratanasiri earned the runner-up slot in 12.26, narrowly edging Pittinun Taweewattanasophon at 12.31. Lim also made a notable run in Clock, claiming the second step on the podium with a 7.33 average, just behind tournament winner Niko Ronkainen of Finland who captured first with a 6.27 average.

The 3x3x3 Blindfolded division delivered dramatic solves that contrasted sharply with standard Rubik's Cube speed events. Requiring complete memorisation before executing turns without sight, the blind event saw Anawin Chaichana seize victory on the strength of a 36.06 single in the final round. Tanai Chaikraveephand took second place with a time of 52.86, while Korakot Inkaew secured third with a 1:10.72 single, capping an all-Thai podium in one of the most mentally demanding disciplines of the day.

Behind the top podium steps, several competitors marked major personal milestones across the varied schedule. Khonthee Jaroensiriphan took on all six events, posting an exceptional 1:40.32 personal best in Megaminx that was 35 percent faster than before, alongside a 6.5 percent drop to 22.50 in Square-1 and a 6.2 percent improvement to 4:51.98 in the 6x6x6 Cube. Peerapat Pornkittipat entered three events, logging a first ever attempt at Square-1 with 21.69 while slicing 36.3 percent off a previous Clock mark with a 6.39 personal best and dropping 23.5 percent in Megaminx to 45.80.

Other dedicated solvers embraced new challenges at this WCA competition. Kantanut Suwanuntanakul tackled five events, recording a first ever attempt at Square-1 in 32.06, a debut Megaminx mark of 1:31.04, an 8 percent Clock best of 4.62, and a tournament-best fifth place in the Clock final. Charinda Thepmalee tackled Clock for the first time with a 10.29 single. Varoth Tontiwachwuthikul delivered a 3:49.84 personal best in the 7x7x7 Cube, improving by 3.6 percent, while Chisanupong Chulasereekul competed in five events and trimmed 14 percent off their previous Clock benchmark to hit 13.85.

In the Megaminx contest, Natthaphat Mahtani delivered a dominant display, winning the title with an average of 37.32 and a sharp single of 34.62 across two rounds. India's Hargun Singh Tikku secured the silver medal with a 44.63 average, followed by Thailand's Parist Pariyakanok in third at 48.47. The result capped a day where host nation competitors captured 12 total podium finishes, while international solvers secured six awards.

As the final cubing competition on the local calendar for the year, Krungthep Farewell 2023 offered a comprehensive celebration of speed cubing diversity. Solvers and spectators alike enjoyed a departure from typical 3x3 results, leaning into the distinct mechanics and mental demands of specialty puzzles. The one-day gathering provided an eventful conclusion to the 2023 competitive campaign, setting a high standard of versatility for the upcoming season.
