Specialist Events Take Centre Stage at Katerini Beach Open 2024English

The tournament hall inside the Mediterranean Village Hotel & Spa stood alive with continuous motion as solving mats clicked and timers reset along the Aegean coastline. Across two days of high-intensity speedcubing from May 18 to May 19, a field of 99 competitors assembled for 14 rounds of action across eight different disciplines. While the standard twisty puzzles drew their regular crowds, the weekend schedule placed notable focus on the unique demands of specialty formats, testing pure memory, mechanical rhythm, and non-standard geometries right by the shoreline of Katerini Beach, Greece.

The specialty events generated fierce competition from the opening morning of Katerini Beach Open 2024. In the 3x3x3 Blindfolded event, where entrants must memorize the entire puzzle layout before dropping a blindfold to execute their solution purely from memory, Thodoris Iatrou of Greece led the seven-person field. Iatrou secured first place with a single solve of 51.49 seconds, standing as the only competitor to break the minute barrier. Nikos Kolovos took second place with a single of 1:51.23, while Pantos Pantos completed the blindfolded podium in 4:49.78.

The two-sided dials of Clock offered another distinct test of mechanical coordination. Panagiotis Christopoulos of Greece captured the victory among 45 competitors with a winning average of 6.10 seconds, anchored by a best single of 4.55. Nikolaos Koutsivos followed in second place with an average of 7.96 seconds, while Dimitris Papazoglou earned third place on an 8.05 mark. The single-round discipline showcased the narrow margins typical of the event, where fluent pin manipulation separates the leaders.

The twelve-sided Megaminx challenged solver endurance, demanding extended lookahead through dozens of puzzle pieces. Ianis Costin Chele of Romania produced a dominant display in the final, securing the top step with a winning average of 39.53 seconds and a best single of 35.18. Greece took the remaining podium spots, as Nikolaos Zikos recorded a 46.13 average for second place and Nikolas Belalidis completed the top three with an average of 54.31 among the 38 competitors.

Corner-turning puzzles delivered dramatic finishes in the subsequent finals. The Skewb contest featured an extraordinarily tight outcome across two rounds, as Nikos Kolovos of Greece won the title on a 4.24 average, edging out Gjorgji Cheshmedjievski of North Macedonia who also finished on an identical 4.24 average. Nikolas Sofianopoulos finished just one hundredth behind in third place with 4.25. In Pyraminx, Ianis Costin Chele claimed another gold with a 2.55 average, followed by Nikolaos Koutsivos at 3.14 and Nikolas Baxevanis at 4.09.

Away from the top steps of the podium, Katerini Beach Open 2024 served as a platform for remarkable personal progression across varied disciplines. Dimitris Salonikidis took on six separate events, achieving a best finish of 16th in Clock, recording his first ever attempts in Skewb at 6.85 and 4x4x4 Cube at 1:20.30, while dropping his 2x2x2 Cube personal best to 2.86, a 47.1 percent improvement. Dimitrios Karaiskos tackled seven disciplines, highlighted by a 25th-place finish in Skewb, initial attempts at Megaminx in 2:46.17 and Clock in 22.97, and a massive 41.4 percent reduction in his 4x4x4 Cube personal best to 1:26.86. Christoforos Panagiotou marked his first 4x4x4 Cube solve at 1:55.04 and cut his 2x2x2 Cube mark by 69.5 percent down to 3.58.

The drive for self-improvement continued through packed tournament brackets. Konstantinos Stamoulis contested six events, registering a best finish of 25th in Pyraminx, an initial Megaminx solve of 2:57.77, a Skewb personal best of 3.99 that was 49.3 percent faster than before, and a 19.5 percent drop in Clock to 17.90. Giannis Grivas entered four events, logged a first Skewb attempt of 14.94, improved his Pyraminx mark by 10.8 percent to 12.41, and reduced his 2x2x2 Cube record by 48.2 percent to 3.98. Giannis Lettas took on seven events, recording a first Megaminx result of 4:21.79, a 21.5 percent drop in 2x2x2 Cube to 3.57, and a 35.4 percent reduction in Skewb to 4.64.

The traditional cubic disciplines rounded out the weekend with high-caliber speed cubing. In the 2x2x2 Cube, Chele captured first place with an average of 1.79 seconds, ahead of Vasilis Prigkos at 2.77 and Gjorgji Cheshmedjievski at 2.91. Chele also took top honours in the 4x4x4 Cube with an average of 32.67 seconds, besting Zois Lefkidis at 35.56 and Prigkos at 36.85, confirming his versatile mastery across puzzle sizes.

The premier event brought the 93 competitors of the 3x3x3 Cube through three intense rounds. Chele completed a five-gold weekend by winning the main Rubik's Cube category with an average of 7.29 seconds and a best single of 6.30. Prigkos secured second with a 9.01 average, while Konstantinos Topouzidis took third with 9.06. Across all events at Katerini Beach Open 2024, Greek competitors accumulated 17 podium positions, alongside five for Romania and two for North Macedonia, concluding a memorable 2024 WCA competition where both niche puzzle specialists and all-around contenders thrived.
