Beljo and Ewert Sweep Titles at Kalmar Cubing 2023English
Inside Folkets Hus i Lindsdal, the rhythmic clack of twisting plastic echoed across the hall throughout the weekend of February 18 to 19. Volunteers, score runners, judges, and delegates moved briskly between the solving stations and scrambling desks, keeping every session running without delay. Their coordinated work provided a seamless stage for the 35 participants assembled in Kalmar, Sweden, creating an organized atmosphere where solvers could focus entirely on each solve across 26 scheduled rounds.
The tournament schedule demanded sharp coordination from the organizing staff, who managed 12 separate disciplines over two packed days. In this WCA competition, the operational crew guided competitors smoothly through early qualifying heats all the way to tense final rounds. From setting up the timing displays to meticulously verifying score sheets, the volunteers kept the entire speedcubing schedule running on time as the field battled across various puzzle formats.
When the official solves began, Toni Beljo established total control over the main event. Beljo secured the win in the classic 3x3x3 Rubik's Cube with a winning average of 7.77 seconds, backed by a best single effort of 6.84. Helmer Ewert followed closely behind in second place with an average of 8.59 seconds, while Ludvig Nilsson rounded out the podium in third with an average of 9.24. These decisive 3x3 results highlighted Beljo's remarkable consistency across three full rounds of head-to-head solving.
Beljo was not finished with the standard cube, putting together a massive multi-event performance across the weekend. He picked up five additional tournament victories, winning the 4x4x4 Cube with a 27.51 average, the 5x5x5 Cube with a 1:01.84 average, the 6x6x6 Cube in 1:58.12, and the 7x7x7 Cube in 3:38.05. Beljo also took the top spot in Pyraminx with a 4.26 average, capturing six first-place finishes in total during the year 2023 contest.
Helmer Ewert mounted an equally impressive campaign across the remaining events, matching Beljo step for step on the podium tally. Ewert captured the 2x2x2 Cube title with an average of 2.23 seconds, edged out the competition in 3x3x3 One-Handed with a 15.75 average, and secured first place in Square-1 at 8.83.
