Youth and Precision Spark Rapid Breakthroughs at Juhannus 2024English
A blistering 7.62 final average from Alwin Rölz in the classic 3x3x3 Cube set the tone for an intense weekend of solving in Varkaus, Finland. Held at Waltterin koulu from June 20 to June 23, 2024, Juhannus 2024 gathered an enthusiastic field of 15 competitors across four full days of action. With 15 events on the schedule, the tournament provided a complete test of versatility across standard puzzles, big cubes, side events, and complex mental challenges. The young talent in attendance made an immediate impression, turning every round into a showcase of rapid personal development.
The premier 3x3 results demonstrated world-class consistency at the top of the standings. Switzerland's Rölz claimed the gold medal with his 7.62 average, backed by a best single of 7.33 across the two rounds. Finnish standout Urho Kinnunen captured second place with an 8.32 average, while Antto Pitkänen rounded out the podium in third with a mark of 9.25. The standard Rubik's Cube competition drew 14 competitors, making it the most heavily contested discipline of the gathering and establishing a high technical benchmark early on.
Throughout the speedcubing program, Rölz proved nearly unstoppable across multiple formats. Beyond his classic three-by-three triumph, he swept the bigger puzzles with commanding performances, capturing the 4x4x4 Cube in an average of 30.79 seconds and taking the 5x5x5 Cube with a 52.99 mark. In the 4x4x4 final, Luukas Lempinen secured the silver medal with a 35.35 average, narrowly ahead of Kinnunen who posted 36.15 for third. The 5x5x5 podium mirrored that depth, as Lempinen took second in 1:02.12 and Kinnunen took bronze in 1:06.03.
Rölz extended his dominant run into the very largest cubes and specialty rotations. He secured first place in the 6x6x6 Cube with a 1:37.78 mean, finishing ahead of Kinnunen at 1:56.58 and Lempinen at 2:07.72. On the massive 7x7x7 Cube, Rölz topped the table in 2:16.44, with Lempinen taking second in 3:29.09 and Niko Ronkainen placing third in 3:35.65. His versatility was further underlined by victories in 3x3x3 One-Handed with a 12.82 average, Clock in 5.65, and Megaminx in 49.74.
Kinnunen countered with dominant displays in the sprint formats, highlighting the explosive talent emerging across Finland. In the 2x2x2 Cube, Kinnunen secured the title with a 2.60 average after delivering a tournament best single of 1.84. He matched that precision in Pyraminx, winning the two-round contest with a 2.31 average. In Skewb, Kinnunen took top honors with an average of 2.57, leading a Finnish sweep alongside Pitkänen who averaged 3.86 and Ronkainen who took third with a 3.91 average.
Away from the top steps of the podium, several competitors logged remarkable milestones that showed the rapid pace of personal growth across the field. Luna Saarelainen entered three events, logging a first career official attempt in the 4x4x4 Cube with a time of 1:38.65. Saarelainen also made massive strides on smaller puzzles, cutting her 2x2x2 personal best down to 5.38 seconds, an improvement of 49.6 percent, and dropping her 3x3x3 best to 23.71 seconds, which was 14 percent faster than her prior standard. Heta Raippalinna also had a breakthrough weekend across three events, earning an 8th-place finish in 2x2x2 while improving her 4x4x4 personal best by 38.2 percent to 1:11.46 and her 3x3x3 single by 24.9 percent down to 15.03 seconds.
Progress was just as visible among the more experienced participants who took on fresh challenges at this WCA competition. Vilma Venäläinen competed in two disciplines, achieving a best finish of 7th place in the 2x2x2 Cube and recording a new 3x3x3 single of 12.66 seconds, improving on her previous mark by 7.7 percent. Tomi Ronkainen took on three events and expanded his long-standing speed cubing repertoire by tackling 3x3x3 Fewest Moves for the first time, logging a result of 71. These individual breakthroughs formed the true foundation of the weekend's competitive atmosphere.
Mental discipline defined the specialized events, where Ronkainen captured the 3x3x3 Fewest Moves title with a winning average of 29.33 moves and a single of 28. In Square-1, Lempinen delivered a winning average of 11.06, supported by a best single of 8.34. The blindfolded categories saw Pitkänen excel under strict memorisation demands, winning the 3x3x3 Blindfolded event with a single solve of 1:47.60 before taking top honors in 3x3x3 Multi-Blind by successfully solving 2 out of 3 cubes in 14:46.
By the close of the 28 rounds of play, Finland led the overall medal haul with 36 podium appearances, while Switzerland earned 11. The intimate setting at Waltterin koulu provided the perfect backdrop for rising stars and seasoned competitors to push their limits and claim new personal benchmarks. As the cubing competition schedule moves forward into future seasons, Juhannus 2024 will stand out as a pivotal stage where emerging talent delivered decisive progress across every layer of the puzzle spectrum.
Alwin Rölz loisti isoilla kuutioilla Varkauden Juhannus 2024 -kilpailussaSuomi
Sveitsiläinen Alwin Rölz hallitsi isoja kuutioita vakuuttavalla otteella, kun 7x7x7-kuution voitto irtosi hurjalla keskiarvolla 2:16.44 ja kierroksen parhaalla yksittäisellä ajalla 2:12.32. Tulos alleviivasi Rölzin poikkeuksellista kestävyyttä ja tarkkuutta, sillä monimutkaisten palojen ryhmittely ja virheetön ratkaiseminen vaativat minuuttien katkeamatonta keskittymistä. Isojen kuutioiden monivaiheiset ratkaisut nousivatkin koko viikonlopun seuratuimmiksi suorituksiksi.
Ensikertalaiset toivat oman vahvan panoksensa kisatunnelmaan. Aapo Ilveskero osallistui ensimmäiseen WCA-kilpailuunsa ja suoritti heti viisi lajia, mukaan lukien ensimmäiset viralliset yrityksensä Pyraminxissä tuloksella 10.60, 2x2x2-kuutiossa tuloksella 6.49 sekä yhdellä kädellä ratkaistavassa 3x3x3 One-Handed -lajissa tuloksella 1:06.39.
