Chodyniecki and Pihel Lead the Way Across Big Cubes and Blind Solving in KārķiEnglish

Adam Chodyniecki produced the defining performance of the weekend at Jāņi Kārķos 2023, delivering a commanding 32.47 second winning average in the 4x4x4 Cube. The Polish competitor paced a field of 19 entrants in the event with a sharp 30.45 single, showcasing the precision and stamina required to handle larger layer puzzles. That endurance theme resonated through the full schedule on June 17, 2023, where 24 competitors gathered in Kārķi, Latvia, to battle across 11 official disciplines and 13 rounds of intense speedcubing action at Kārķu tautas nams.

The 4x4x4 Cube podium showcased tight international competition, with Piotr Olszewski of Poland taking the runner-up spot on a 36.21 average, closely followed by Lithuania's Vilius Ribinskas in third at 36.60. Big cube disciplines demand steady execution without pause, and the long-form complexity extended into the blindfolded categories. Remo Pihel of Estonia captured the 4x4x4 Blindfolded title with a best single solve of 8:45.20, edging out Mikus Lembergs of Latvia who finished in 8:54.56, while Jānis Zirnis took third place in 10:18.00.

Memory and stamina were tested further in the 3x3x3 Multi-Blind, where Mikus Lembergs topped the standings with a flawless 8/8 result achieved in 48:13. Latvia secured the top two spots as Jānis Zirnis successfully logged 8/13 cubes in exactly 1:00:00, while Vilius Ribinskas completed the podium by securing 2/2 in 11:09. Kasparas Lienys added to the blindfolded accolades by winning the standard 3x3x3 Blindfolded round with a swift 59.95 single, demonstrating sharp recall in the single-cube blind race.

The premier 3x3x3 Cube round delivered high-caliber speed cubing and some of the cleanest 3x3 results of the season. Adam Chodyniecki secured his second major win of the meeting with a 7.59 average and a best single of 7.09 across two rounds involving 23 competitors. In the 3x3x3 One-Handed event, Rūdolfs Vīnkalns took victory for the home nation with a 15.79 average and a 15.17 single, overcoming Tomas Jankauskas in second at 16.38 and Roberts Dreijers in third at 17.23.

Roberts Dreijers also asserted himself at the front of the pack across the side events, capturing two gold medals on the day. Dreijers took first place in the 2x2x2 Cube with a 2.43 average and a 1.70 best single, finishing ahead of Mikus Lembergs at 2.58 and Vilius Ribinskas at 3.01. Dreijers then doubled his tally in Square-1, recording a 11.98 winning average with a 9.48 single to finish ahead of Remo Pihel at 14.14 and Piotr Olszewski at 16.19.

Away from the top of the podium, several competitors made substantial leaps in their personal records across multiple events. Ruslans Ševčuks delivered massive gains by dropping his Clock personal best by 50.8 percent down to 30.98, while also improving his 3x3x3 Blindfolded mark by 29 percent to 5:19.47 and setting a 4x4x4 Cube personal best of 47.02. Titas Karvelis shaved 26.5 percent off his Skewb mark with a 7.63 personal best and logged a 1.87 in 2x2x2 Cube, while Oskars Kaminskis lowered his Skewb best by 24.8 percent to 7.87 and trimmed his 4x4x4 Cube mark by 17.8 percent to 2:03.68.

Marks Fridmans cut his 2x2x2 Cube mark by 24.8 percent to 3.57, dropped his Pyraminx best by 15.9 percent to 6.92, and made his first ever attempt at Square-1 with a 42.02. Adrians Stahovskis lowered his 3x3x3 One-Handed time by 21.6 percent to 1:24.37 and his Skewb best by 15.8 percent to 10.91. Toms Edvards Vucens took on seven events, improving his Clock mark by 7.9 percent to 15.78 alongside his first ever attempt at Square-1 in 47.70. Two competitors entered their first WCA competition in Kārķi: Miķelis Gailums completed first attempts in 2x2x2 Cube at 6.09 and 3x3x3 Cube at 23.87, while Alberts Mikulovs logged his first attempt in 3x3x3 Cube with a 47.44.

The shorter mechanical puzzles rounded out the competitive program with quick turnarounds and close margins. Piotr Olszewski secured the Pyraminx title with a 3.24 winning average, anchored by a best single of 2.23. Przemysław Rogalski took the Clock victory in 6.20, leading Adam Chodyniecki at 7.31 and Vilius Ribinskas at 7.48. In the Skewb final, Remo Pihel collected another gold with a 4.58 average, edging Chodyniecki who posted 4.90 and Lembergs who claimed third with 5.59.

Across every bracket of the Rubik's Cube community, the host nation showed remarkable depth by earning 14 total podium places, while Poland claimed nine, Lithuania six, and Estonia four. The single-day tournament demonstrated the breadth of talent across the Baltic region and beyond. Jāņi Kārķos 2023 concluded as a memorable cubing competition that rewarded both rapid turning in sprint events and deep focus during the grueling long-format rounds.
