Alper Şakım and Niko Ronkainen Dominate at İstanbul Welcome 2025English
A nail-biting finish in the premier event set the tone for the entire weekend at İstanbul Welcome 2025, where Alper Şakım secured the 3x3x3 Cube title with a 9.63-second final average, edging out Mohammed Al Said by a mere twenty-two hundredths of a second. The championship atmosphere brought fierce intensity across every round, proving that even a fraction of a second could determine who walked away with top honors. With 58 contenders battling through three grueling stages in the classic Rubik's Cube, every turn carried immense weight on the stage.
Held across January 11 and January 12 at the Beykoz Açı Koleji in İstanbul, Turkey, the tournament delivered a packed weekend of high-level speedcubing across seven distinct disciplines. A total of 59 competitors gathered to test their skills in 10 rounds of official play. For the participants in attendance, this major cubing competition offered a vital arena to measure their preparation and claim silverware across both standard twisty puzzles and specialized hardware in early 2025.
Beyond his victory in the traditional 3x3, Alper Şakım proved his versatility by capturing gold in Square-1, taking the event with a 20.54-second average and a single of 14.57 seconds. In the 3x3 results, Oman competitor Mohammed Al Said finished as runner-up with an average of 9.85, followed closely by Ömer Çetinkaya in third at 9.87 seconds. Alper Şakım also took second place in 3x3x3 One-Handed with an average of 19.80, confirming a remarkably strong multi-event presence.
Finland representative Niko Ronkainen turned in a dominant performance throughout the weekend, collecting three individual tournament victories. Ronkainen claimed the 2x2x2 Cube title with a blistering 2.52-second average after posting a best single of 1.94 seconds, outperforming Mohammed Al Said and Deniz Yıldırım on the podium. Ronkainen carried that momentum into the 3x3x3 One-Handed final, capturing the gold with a 19.11-second average, and added a third victory in Skewb with a winning average of 4.23 seconds.
In other championship brackets at İstanbul Welcome 2025, Mohammed Al Said took top honors in the 4x4x4 Cube, posting a winning average of 36.02 seconds to defeat Ömer Çetinkaya and Niko Ronkainen. Meanwhile, the Pyraminx event saw Turkey competitor Nisan Yalduz rise to the top of a 26-player field, clinching first place with a 5.48-second average over runner-up Emir Yusuf Çiçekdemir and third-place finisher Ronkainen. The variety of formats demanded total focus from anyone seeking hardware across multiple tables.
