Alexey Tsvetkov Dominates Across Nine Events at İstanbul Spring 2023English

Fifty-five competitors gathered over two days on April 1 and April 2 for İstanbul Spring 2023, filling the venue at Güneşli Sınav Koleji with relentless problem solving. The discipline demanded in speedcubing competitions often mirrors the quiet focus of memory sports, where competitors must internalise complex states and execute exact sequences without hesitation. In İstanbul, Turkey, that exacting precision defined the entire weekend across 15 separate rounds, testing mental clarity through a demanding schedule of twisty puzzles.

Alexey Tsvetkov authored an extraordinary run throughout the weekend, securing victories in six of the nine events contested. In the classic Rubik's Cube main event, Tsvetkov captured the title with a winning average of 7.23 seconds over three rounds, posting a best single solve of 6.52 seconds. Alikhan Zhanybekov of Kyrgyzstan took second place with a 9.71 average, while Uzbekistan's Sherkhan-Mukhammad Nasirov claimed third on a 10.23 average to close out the final 3x3 results.

Tsvetkov's technical control remained unmatched across the smaller puzzles as well. In the 2x2x2 Cube, he delivered a tournament-best 1.43 second average to take gold, ahead of Turkey's Mehmet Efe Günay with 1.95 seconds and Alikhan Zhanybekov with 3.67 seconds. Moving to the triangular Pyraminx, Tsvetkov posted an average of 2.29 seconds, winning ahead of Kazakhstan's Daniyal Arstambek at 4.69 seconds and Zhanybekov at 6.40 seconds. He completed the sprint triple with a Skewb triumph, averaging 3.20 seconds to edge Archie Fedulov at 5.89 seconds and Arstambek at 6.85 seconds.

The larger puzzles and mechanical specialties expanded the breadth of the cubing competition. Alexey Tsvetkov added the 4x4x4 Cube to his tally with a 32.74 average, defeating Zhanybekov's 34.81 and Turkey's Mert Sağdınç at 36.00. Tsvetkov also topped the Clock rankings with a 6.31 average, besting Romania's Matei-Alexandru Ghencea at 7.52 and Turkey's Sarp Abaç at 10.37. Meanwhile, Alikhan Zhanybekov claimed top honors in the 5x5x5 Cube, producing a winning mark of 1:08.21 ahead of Sağdınç and Ömer Çetinkaya.

The specialised single-handed and alignment categories brought even more variety to this WCA competition. Tolga Kaan Kantarcı earned victory in the 3x3x3 One-Handed division with an 11.62 average across two rounds, locking in a best single solve of 10.53 seconds. In Square-1, Utku Yılmaz emerged as champion with a 16.16 average and a best effort of 10.99 seconds, finishing ahead of Zhanybekov at 23.57 seconds and Arstambek at 23.87 seconds.

Away from the top steps of the podium, several competitors achieved remarkable milestones through individual progress. Çağan Gürsoy showed tremendous advancement across seven events, trimming his Skewb personal best down to 5.44 seconds, a 56.2 percent improvement, while also lowering his Pyraminx mark by 47.4 percent to 5.17 seconds. Robert Mihai Martius tackled his first ever attempt at 3x3x3 One-Handed with a 41.57 second result, alongside a massive 48.9 percent drop in Square-1 to 25.93 seconds and a 37.4 percent improvement in Clock to 17.52 seconds. Buğra Tosun took on eight events and improved his Skewb best by 46.1 percent to 6.87 seconds, while Dali Mahmoud Abdullah entered eight events, logged his first Square-1 solve of 56.82 seconds, and dropped his Pyraminx best by 38.7 percent to 7.46 seconds.

The personal breakthroughs continued throughout the roster of active solvers. Ata Can Ulkay completed first career attempts in both Pyraminx at 14.62 seconds and Clock at 47.32 seconds, alongside a 3x3x3 Cube personal best of 40.62 seconds that improved on his previous mark by 39 percent. Eren Alessio Marino registered his first Clock solve at 16.85 seconds and slashed his 3x3x3 Cube time by 33.5 percent to 15.64 seconds. Tarık Ali Taşgetiren tackled 3x3x3 One-Handed for the first time with a 42.40 second solve while cutting his 3x3x3 Cube best by 24.4 percent to 17.59 seconds, and Batuhan Eralp logged his first official 2x2x2 Cube attempt at 14.00 seconds while dropping his 3x3x3 Cube record by 21.1 percent to 19.79 seconds.

Across nine distinct disciplines and fifteen hard-fought rounds, the speed cubing festival in İstanbul delivered fierce rivalry alongside individual triumphs. Russia and Turkey led the medal table with eight podium finishes each, followed by Kyrgyzstan with six, Kazakhstan with three, and single placements for Romania and Uzbekistan. İstanbul Spring 2023 wrapped up having demonstrated the immense focus, mental endurance, and mechanical skill that define modern solving in 2023.
