Ben Baron Sweeps Eight Titles at Israel Championship 2024English
Ben Baron delivered one of the most commanding overall performances in national tournament history at Katzir Gymnasium, capturing eight separate titles across a packed four-day schedule. His march through the weekend reached its apex in the premier 3x3x3 Cube, where he posted a winning average of 6.43 seconds alongside a best single of 5.71 to secure the national crown. Over the course of the Israel Championship 2024, held from August 18 to August 21 in Rehovot, Israel, Baron established himself across short sprints, big cubes, and complex memory disciplines alike.
The 2024 gathering brought together 289 competitors tackling 16 official disciplines across 30 rounds of play. With national titles on the line, the pressure at the tables was evident from the opening rounds of the Rubik's Cube main event through the final medal races. The 3x3 results confirmed the depth of the field, as Baron led the podium ahead of Ezra Shere of the USA, who took second place with a 7.71 average, and Yoav Vishne, who finished third with a mark of 7.96.
Beyond his victory in the classic puzzle, Baron dominated the large cubes and the memory disciplines. He won the 5x5x5 Cube with a 53.22 average, edging out Zecharya Moshavi at 53.91 and Elai Amit-Wender at 56.52. Baron also claimed the 6x6x6 Cube in 1:38.59 and the 7x7x7 Cube in 2:28.05. In the blindfolded categories, Baron took first place in 3x3x3 Blindfolded with a 33.01 single, won the 4x4x4 Blindfolded event in 5:16.46, secured the 5x5x5 Blindfolded victory in 10:22.00, and solved 22 of 23 cubes in 55:43 to win 3x3x3 Multi-Blind ahead of Guy Taragano and Yoad Yahalom Weiss.
Sprint events brought equally sharp drama to this WCA competition. Yoav Vishne put together an exceptional showcase in the 2x2x2 Cube, setting an Israeli national record single of 0.68 seconds during the rounds and capturing the title with a 1.09 final average. Ben Baron took second in 2x2x2 with 1.55, and Ben Matyas took third with 1.73. Vishne also added gold medals in Skewb with a 3.32 average and Megaminx with a 37.72 mark, proving his range across wildly different puzzle mechanisms throughout the busy Israel Championship 2024 program.
Elsewhere on the schedule, Zecharya Moshavi took the 4x4x4 Cube championship with a swift 26.37 average, finishing ahead of Baron at 31.16 and Vishne at 32.10. Ezra Shere took top honors in Pyraminx with a 2.10 average, Omri Kehila captured the 3x3x3 One-Handed title with a 12.03 mark over Baron and Moshavi, Elai Amit-Wender secured the Clock crown with a 5.54 average, and Itamar Turm topped the Square-1 event with an 8.80 average. Across every bracket, speed cubing at the highest standard defined the medal rounds.
Away from the top steps of the podium, several competitors embraced heavy workloads and expanded their repertoires with milestone attempts. Dov Harazi took on 10 separate events at the Israel Championship 2024, recording a personal best finish of 19th place in the 6x6x6 Cube while making his first official tournament attempts in Skewb with a 10.79, 5x5x5 Cube with a 1:27.84, and Clock with a 10.02. Gilad Weinberger also entered 10 events, achieving a high finish of 48th in the 5x5x5 Cube while registering his first official attempts in the 5x5x5 Cube at 1:44.61, Megaminx at 2:05.91, and Square-1 at 36.63.
The ambition continued through deep schedules for other dedicated participants. Yair Zomer completed a flawless 6 for 6 cubes in 52:06 during his first career attempt at 3x3x3 Multi-Blind to finish fourth overall, alongside new debuts in Square-1 at 19.17 and Clock at 16.50 across 10 events. Nadav Feldman tackled nine events, finishing 44th in 5x5x5 Cube while logging first attempts in the 5x5x5 Cube at 1:40.76, Skewb at 10.70, and Clock at 10.44. Leon Cavada Chairsky entered six disciplines, logging inaugural attempts in Pyraminx at 11.57, Skewb at 9.44, and 4x4x4 Cube at 1:39.88. Eliyahu Rozenfeld handled 13 events, finishing 12th in Multi-Blind after going 2 for 2 in 17:22, while also posting his first official marks in 5x5x5 Cube at 2:14.04 and 6x6x6 Cube at 5:04.92.
The four days at Katzir Gymnasium demonstrated the remarkable vitality of speedcubing in the region. Competitors representing Israel earned 46 podium placements alongside two podiums secured by the United States, concluding a memorable chapter for the community. As the Israel Championship 2024 drew to a close in Rehovot, the standard had been set extraordinarily high across all 16 events, leaving a definitive mark on the national record books and setting the tone for the seasons ahead.
