Antonio López Dominates Eight-Event Roster at Iruña Open 2025 in PamplonaEnglish

Fifty-four competitors gathered at the Casa de la Juventud across March 29 and March 30 for Iruña Open 2025, bringing the energy of live speedcubing to Pamplona, Navarra, Spain. Across 14 total rounds, newcomers and tournament veterans alike stepped up to the timer to test their preparation. For anyone walking into a WCA competition for the first time, the atmosphere brings a unique blend of nervous anticipation, ticking display clocks, and the rhythmic sound of turning plastic across dozens of competition stations.

Stepping onto the stage at a cubing competition transforms solitary home practice into public sport. New entrants must navigate strict inspection rules, unfamiliar judging protocols, and the focused silence that settles across the floor during critical rounds. The weekend in Pamplona provided the perfect proving ground, offering an eight-event roster that tested everything from traditional Rubik's Cube speed to intricate specialty puzzles and blindfolded concentration across two packed days of action in 2025.

The 3x3x3 Cube main event served as the weekend centerpiece, drawing 48 competitors through three demanding rounds of competition. Antonio López produced exceptional 3x3 results, capturing top honors with a tournament-winning average of 8.62 seconds alongside the round best single solve of 7.27 seconds. Julen Simón Iriarte secured second place on the podium with a 9.65 average, while Aitor Ibañez Larrea earned third place by recording a 9.96 average in the final round.

Beyond the main event, Antonio López established total command across multiple disciplines throughout the gathering. In the 3x3x3 One-Handed event, López earned gold with a 16.12 average and a 12.48 single, narrowly edging Spain's Mikel Manterola Zarraga who took second at 16.25, while Hugo Guillet of France placed third at 17.57. López then conquered the massive 7x7x7 Cube with a 2:18.60 average and a best single of 2:14.42, leading José Miguel Beguiristain and Julen Simón Iriarte. López closed out his four-victory weekend by taking first in 3x3x3 Blindfolded with a winning single time of 1:27.31.

While top podium steps often capture headlines, personal progress drove the spirit of the weekend on the competition floor. Sara Plaza delivered massive breakthroughs, lowering her Pyraminx personal best to 7.57 seconds to become 56.5 percent faster than her prior mark, alongside an 11.88 3x3x3 Cube solve that cut 22.8 percent off her previous record. Mei Ying Melgarejo Cerqueira also made a huge leap on Pyraminx, cutting 49.6 percent with a new best of 5.93 seconds while taking 17th in one-handed solving. Fermín Zubasti took on four events, highlighted by a 13th-place finish in 3x3x3 One-Handed with a 38.89 personal best that improved on his previous mark by 49.4 percent.
